12 Reasons Keanu Reeves' Constantine Is Better Than You Remember

About this list

Francis Lawrence's 2005 film Constantine starred Keanu Reeves as the DC Comics/Vertigo character. Fans quickly noted the movie version didn't match the comics. Alan Moore's Hellblazer comics feature a blond, foul-mouthed Brit, but the film moves to Los Angeles with dark-haired Reeves, who wisely skips the British accent he attempted in 1992's Bram Stoker's Dracula. The differences turned off some comic fans, contributing to the film's 46% Rotten Tomatoes score. Coming on the heels of Reeves's Matrix trilogy role, Constantine faced unfair comparisons. The comic book movie genre was still finding its footing in 2005, with Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy released just a year prior and Iron Man three years away. Despite a devilish villain and visual flair, many dismissed Constantine. With Reeves back in the spotlight thanks to John Wick, it's time to reevaluate this overlooked gem. You might be surprised to find 2005's Constantine is better than you remember.

Hell Is Depicted As Undergoing A Perpetual Nuclear Blast

Creating the look of hell inConstantine shows hell as a constant nuclear blast.Director Francis Lawrence had aConstantine displays a unique vision.Mike Fink, visual effects supervisor, explained, "His idea was that hell is a parallel universe." "It exists in another dimension as a complete replica of our world. You have the same buildings, the same streets, and the same rooms. Everything seems to be hit by a nuclear heat wave. This universe keeps decaying forever. It just never stops."

Seven vendors and long filming took to create this effect, but the result is a hell like no other. Palm trees burn as a ruined LA skyline looms. A radioactive wind tears apart everything. Cadaverous demons swarm the souls. The FX team used real footage of declassified nuclear blasts from the 1984 TV movie "The Day After."The Day After.

'Constantine' Is A Supernatural Film Noir

John Constantine is a hard-drinking, chain-smoking freelance exorcist who has been to hell and back. This detective character enters a world of supernatural beings he calls "half-breeds," caught in a wager between God and the Devil.

Constantine trades film noir tropes. Constantine sees everything until a woman who looks more than she is brings trouble. Doubles appear—Rachel Weisz plays twin sisters—and double-crosses happen. Everyone plays a long game with bigger stakes. A simple investigation turns into a huge conspiracy. No Maltese Falcon appears.ConstantineConstantine has its own MacGuffin: the "Spear of Destiny," the lance that pierced Jesus Christ.

Constantine delivers a Philip Marlowe-style voiceover before the credits. Leah Schnelbach makes a strong case for ConstantineConstantine is a modern film noir.over at Tor.

The Mystic Is Preserved By Ambiguity

Heaven and hell mechanics are simple. The theology of Constantine has deep roots in Catholicism, but the film includes unexplained plot points. Fans of supernatural ambiguity will like this.ConstantineConstantine is heavily rooted in Catholicism, but the film has unexplained plot points. Fans of ambiguity in the supernatural will like this.

A world where everything is explained offers little wonder. A film like this risks getting stuck in too much setup. We know the God and Devil wager rules and what "half-breeds" and demons are. We never learn what the keyring of symbols Constantine flips through during the first exorcism is, or what he wraps around his hand when demons attack outside his apartment, or what Papa Midnite's powers actually are.

Constantine's world holds things we never see. This treats those who like supernatural elements to feel real and numinous.

    The Demons Are Successfully Creepy

Most fights in Constantineare between the main character and human-looking "half-breeds." Actual demons enter the action. Besides a "Vermin Man" made of bugs, snakes, and other critters, most demons look like human corpses missing the top half of their heads. This visual is striking. It came from actual autopsy photos and the work of Polish artist Zdzisław Beksiński. Stan Winston Studios and Tippett Studio brought the demons to life after concept art got approval.actual photographs of autopsiesThe work of Polish artist Zdzisław Beksiński created the demons. Larry Cedar, known to fans of Deadwood and Community, appears as a demon made of bugs, snakes, and crabs. Or at least his voice does. Shia LaBeouf Appears As Constantine's Taxi-Driving Sidekick

If early 2000s movies needed to feature Tom Cruise, then...Shia LaBeoufShia LaBeouf plays John Constantine's sidekick. He drives Constantine around LA in a taxi, similar to his role opposite Will Smith in the 2004 noir hybrid.I, Robot.

LaBeouf gets a funny supporting role that leads to starring spots in weaker films. If you dislike the man known as an actual cannibal...actual cannibalhe appears in 'Constantine'.ConstantineLaBeouf briefly fights a petty foe with the pair. He also delivers a good line when he tells Papa Midnite's bouncer, "Who's a rat in a dress now?"
