Notably Awful CGI In MCU Movies

By Every Day Story14 items

About this list

The MCU is a film giant, delivering innovative storytelling and entertaining adaptations of Marvel comics. Quality visual effects shine in films like Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Endgame. However, bad CGI still exists in Marvel movies. Black Panther's computer-generated battle between T'Challa and Killmonger stands out as particularly poor. The Incredible Hulk also features unconvincing CGI, with a villain that looks like it was taken from a video game. Marvel's visual effects aren't the worst in superhero movies, but the demands of its multi-hero franchises have led to shortcuts. For instance, the Thor: Ragnarok VFX team had just eight weeks to transform a New York alleyway into a Norwegian cliff side. The highly anticipated nano armor in Infinity War is not the most convincing effect, but Marvel fans have high standards. Despite this, the MCU generally delivers spectacular special effects and engaging narratives, making the worst CGI distracting.

Killmonger Vs. Black Panther In 'Black Panther'

The visual team for Black Panther used CG models instead of actors for elaborate action sequences.Black Panther used CG modelsVisual effects studios made incredible strides with CGI. However, the CG replacements in this film are not convincing. This is especially true during the battle between Killmonger and T'Challa, where computer-generated characters face off weightlessly in a train tunnel.

According to theVFX movies chartBig-budget films and blockbusters now need over 2,000 VFX scenes. This contrasts with the 500-1,000 scenes needed before CGI reached its current level. Overworked and underpaid VFX teams sometimes fail, as seen in Black Panther.Black Panther.

Bruce Banner's Floating Head In The Hulkbuster Armor In 'Avengers: Infinity War'

As visually advanced asAvengers: Infinity Waris, it falls short sometimes. For every impressive Spider-Man web-slinging scene, Weta Digital has a counterpoint.Weta DigitalWeta Digital's battle on Titan showed something ridiculous and unbelievable. Bruce Banner's head jutting out of the Hulkbuster suit, for example, looks unnatural and distracts from the scene.

During the Wakanda battle, Banner, unable to transform into the Hulk after Thanos's earlier beatdown, wears the Hulkbuster armor. Though a Hulk-sized Iron Man is scary, the human pilot's movements do not match the CG suit, making Banner's floating head look misplaced.

Killian's Rubbery Extremis Body When He Fights Tony In 'Iron Man 3'

InIron Man 3Aldrich Killian started developing Extremis-enhanced super soldiers because Tony Stark refused to work with him. Killian faces Iron Man at the film's end, using his own Extremis-enhanced body to compete.

VFX supervisorChris Townsendcreated a dazzling CGI blend for the Extremis effect. The glow from Killian looks hot, but it is obvious when actor Guy Pearce is replaced by a CG model for the complex choreography. Thus, Killian as the villain looks rubbery, not real.

Goose In Zero Gravity In 'Captain Marvel'

VFX supervisor Chris Townsendrevealedthat four different cats played the role of Captain Marvel.Captain MarvelGoose, but 70% of Goose's scenes were CGI. One entirely CG moment shows Goose floating in zero gravity. You probably needed a heads-up.

Cats cannot float on their own, so the audience assumes the Goose with extended limbs is a computer model. Still, even with that assumption, any cat owner says the weightless feline looks unbelievable. However, Goose is a Flerken, not a cat, so she might be perfectly modeled.

The Abomination In 'The Incredible Hulk'

2008'sThe Incredible HulkEdward Norton stars in The Incredible Hulk, but Emil Blonsky as the Abomination foils him. The film has narrative ups and downs, but the poor visual effects distract viewers; they make both the Hulk and the Abomination look like video game avatars, according to Don Kaye from Syfy Wire.Syfy Wiresays this.

ThoughThe Incredible Hulklooks better than Lou Ferrigno's TV Hulk from the 1970s.TV HulkThe Abomination appears overdone and animated in the 1970s. This makes it hard for audiences to engage with the main action. An earlier scene, where a pre-Abomination Blonsky checks his muscles, almost makes viewers tune out completely.

    The Rhinos In 'Black Panther'

Much ofBlack Pantherused computer-generated effects. Wakanda's tech advances make CGI a necessary tool.Method Studiocreated "407 shots, including making a 3,600 square km digital environment, suits, and digital doubles for Black Panther and Killmonger." This shows they heavily built all CG characters and gadgets, including the Rhino warriors Wakandan soldiers ride into battle.

The CG creatures look cute, but they are not as realistic as Disney's live-action Dumbo.Dumbo.

The Battle Between Asgardians And Elves In 'Thor: The Dark World'

The battle between dark elves and Asgardians during the prologue of Thor: The Dark WorldThor: The Dark WorldVFX supervisor Blur Studio faced a challenge with the battle between dark elves and Asgardians in the prologue of Thor: The Dark World.Kevin Margo saidthey "approached the Prologue from a pure 3D perspective knowing that they would have 80 plus cameras looking at the environment... because a solid 3D base would let them point the camera where they wanted with little extra work on the back-end."

The VFX team made "fully digital battle scenes mixed with some live action shots." The massive effort in digital production deserves praise, but the final look appears computer-generated. This is not what you want in a live-action movie. When fighters lack weight, the scene feels weightless.

Bucky Falling From The Train In 'Captain America: The First Avenger'

Granted,Captain America: The First AvengerThe film Captain America: The First Avenger was released in 2011, so the visual effects are not as good as those in Endgame.Endgame'sfinal battle. However, the scene where Bucky falls to his death loses impact because the graphics are bad.

In the scene, Cap and Bucky fight the Red Skull's forces on a train when a wall blows off. Bucky flies, and Cap jumps out after his friend—too late to save him. Bucky falls into the gorge below, appearing to lie on his back instead of falling to his end.

Replacing A New York Alley With Norway In 'Thor: Ragnarok'

Odin's final moments with his boys in Thor: Ragnarok originally happened in a New York alleyway.Thor: RagnarokThis happens in a New York alleyway (see the first trailer when Thor throws his hammer at Hela). VFX supervisor Jake Morrison told InverseInverseDirector Taika Waititi wanted a better location for Odin's death. The VFX team had eight weeks to build what the supervisor needed.Dave Morley handled the replacement of a New York alley with Norway in 'Thor: Ragnarok'.says it was 150 shots of a Norwegian meadow.

Morley says, "We knew going into the big project quickly, we had a tight schedule."Thor.Morley says even with the time given, the VFX team could build a beautiful digital space that matched the emotions.

The VFX team repositioned actors in only eight weeks. The lighting and compositing in the alleyway-to-meadow scene still look wrong.

    The Chitauri In 'The Avengers'

Visual development supervisor for.The Avengers., Ryan Meinerding told.Thrillist.Since the VFX team lacked a strong visual for the Chitauri, they sketched about 60 or 70 times to guide the alien army's look. Gold headbands suggested they were Thanos's royal army, meant to look regal. Battle tools were designed so Black Widow could use one in an interesting way.

The Chitauri movement copied military and SWAT teams; they didn't show faces. Director Joss Whedon saw scenes where they removed masks. The VFX team then fleshed out the model to create a few face shapes.

The Chitauri army's design effort is impressive. However, the CGI characters look rubbery next to Marvel's top heroes.

Hulk Vs. Surtur In 'Thor: Ragnarok'

Surtur used only keyframe animation to create him.The team used various textures to make his volcanic skin look both fluid and rigid. The VFX team added fire, embers, and smoke to boost the volcanic effect. Because Surtur is a mountain-sized fire demon, the team faced a big job.

Surtur does not look like a living being compared to Thor, Hela, and the realistic Hulk. He looks like the dark heavy metal god you paint on a van side, which the animators probably aimed for.

Marvel VFX supervisor Dan DeLeeuw revealed that they digitally copied 70 hired extras to make 500 Wakandan warriors. This is on top of the thousands of monsters in Thanos's army. Actors wore motion-capture suits so soldiers could be digitally made for the big screen.

The battle's scale impresses people. It often feels like a video game clip, not live-action.

Iron Man's Nano-Armor In 'Avengers: Infinity War'

Iron Man's nano armor showed up inAvengers: Infinity War. Iron Man's Nano-Armor in 'Avengers: Infinity War' appears in the list 'Notably Awful CGI In MCU Movies'.Fans expected this fight. They looked forward to it.Fans first noticedTony Stark's new look appeared in the 2018 Super Bowl trailer for the film. The suit likely copied the Bleeding Edge suit fromInvincible Iron Man #25.This armor fits Tony Stark's body using a liquid metal frame.

Iron Man's nano armor shows Stark's tech skill. However, the computer effects used to make it look bad. Tony Stark covers himself in video game pixels instead of activating nanite armor. The finished armor looks too shiny to be real, and Stark's movements seem too free to be true.
