About this list

In comics, character deaths are often just a temporary inconvenience - they usually come back sooner or later. The MCU is different: when a character dies on screen, they're generally gone for good, unless you're Loki. Apart from flashbacks or prequels, the only ways back are through alternate realities like WandaVision or Infinity Stone plot twists. This permanence makes their death scenes monumental. There are fascinating stories behind these scenes, from filming to final words. The way characters meet their end leaves a lasting mark. This list explores the stories behind the most memorable MCU death scenes.

Tony Stark's Last Scene Was The Result Of A Great Deal Of Work

Tony Stark's end was one of the most painful moments in any superhero movie. There is a solid reason for this. Rewatch the scene; after Tony's famous reply to Thanos, "I am Iron Man," he says nothing. This choice broke the script, and much of the scene was improvised.

Robert Downey Jr. was the one whoinsistedStark stay quiet while dying on the battlefield. Screenwriters wrote "lovely dying words for Tony Stark," but Downey had a different idea. Stephen McFeely said, "a guy who has talked and talked and talked for many, many movies - when he doesn't talk, you are crushed." Downey was right, and so was McFeely; that scene hit everyone watching hard.

About Iron Man's final words, theRussosworked hard to decide what he should say because silence failed. "We were in the editing room, and we thought, 'He has to say something. This character has lived and died by quips.' But we couldn't. We tried a million different last lines. Our editor, Jeff Ford, who worked with us in all four movies and tells great stories, said, 'Why don't we go full circle and say, "I am Iron Man?"' Then we said, 'Get the cameras! We shoot this tomorrow.'"

Having the line did not mean they could film it because Downey did not want to return to that emotional scene. The movie finished shooting. They had to convince him to reshoot the line that was a callback to his final words in the 2008 movie,Iron Man. Joe Russo explained Downey's choice to keep the line out in an interview withCinemaBlend:

I dined with Robert Downey Jr. about two weeks before filming began. He said, "I don't want to go back into that emotional state. It's hard." Joel Silver, the producer, attended the dinner. Joel, an old friend of Robert's, jumped in. He told Robert, "What are you talking about? That's the greatest line I've ever heard! You must say this! You have to do this!" Joel Silver's presence helped Robert say that line.

Thanos's Demise Was The Culmination Of His Character's Arc From 'Infinity War' To 'Endgame'

Thanos was the main villain in the MCU's first few phases. When he finally appeared fully inAvengers: Infinity War, he came out strong. After beating the Hulk, he had aconversationwith Thor, which returned inAvengers: Endgame:

I know what losing feels like. To feel so desperate that you are right... yet fail anyway. It is scary. It makes your legs go jelly. I ask you, for what? Fear it. Run from it. Destiny happens regardless. And now, it is here. Or should I say... I am.

That movie ended with Thanos's famous snap. He returned inEndgameThor was slain early in the first act after he followed his advice to go for his head.headThanos's death is not what people talk about; it resulted from him letting them end him, accomplishing his goal.

He perished at the end ofEndgameThanos died in a permanent way, looking back to the speech from the start ofInfinity WarAs Thanos realized he lost, his legs turned to jelly. He sat down, let his destiny happen, and scattered his ashes in the wind. Thanos saw himself as a martyr; his destiny was always assured.

Loki's Demise Was Difficult For Josh Brolin To Film

Loki has killed more characters in the MCU than most. He dies constantly, but it is usually a trick. His death inAvengers: Infinity Warwas real, until time travel stuff inEndgameThe sequence happened soon after the movie started, stunning many viewers. Tom Hiddleston described the scene's emotion and its meaning for the character at an appearance atACE Comic-Con:

When I shot the scene inInfinity WarI think it is strong he calls himself an Odinson. That ends Loki's journey and what he can do. This death raises the emotional stakes. It raises the stakes. Thanos is someone more dangerous than anyone we have seen.

Josh BrolinJosh Brolin did not like filming the scene where he choked the character. "He had been with that character for so long. And he's so lauded for doing it. Tom was so vulnerable at that moment. So, choking him out wasn't the most fun thing I have ever done." It was fast, and it felt like Thanos quickly snuffed out a flame, but it showed the force of nature Thanos was in the MCU.

Loki managed to steal the Tesseract and escape to an alternate reality inAvengers: EndgameLoki's story continues in his Disney+ series, but that Loki is not the one who died. The dead Loki had character growth; the saved version fromEndgamehas only just scared New York City. Hiddleston will likely have more fun playing the character despite bringing him back inInfinity War.

Natasha Romanoff's Sacrifice Was Designed To Close Her Character Arc

Black Widow'sdeathinAvengers: Endgamewas emotional. It showed Black Widow's care for her friends. Clint was equally devoted; both fought to sacrifice themselves. This shows a person who cares for friends; it is the definition of a superhero. Her death was permanent, even though her solo film is still coming out.

Clint's story moved toward a sacrifice before his end. Natasha took the Avengers' leadership. Clint adopted a Ronin persona, traveling the world to kill bad guys. He lost everything and wanted to quit. Natasha knew he could get it back; she valued Clint's life more than hers. Her sacrifice was noble and noteworthy, but it was not the original plan.

An scene existed.alternate scene filmed that minimized the sacrifice. In the deleted scene, Thanos and his forces arrive on Vormir. This forces Clint and Natasha to act. The action is intense; it is not poorly filmed, but it takes away from the core idea of getting the Soul Stone: sacrifice. The deleted scene shows Thanos and his forces arriving on Vormir, forcing Clint and Natasha into action. This scene is intense, but it weakens the main idea about getting the Soul Stone: sacrifice.

Spider-Man's Demise Was Largely Ad-Libbed By Downey And Holland

The Ancient One explained in a deleted scene why people snapped away in Infinity War could return in Endgame.Infinity War.It could return in Endgame.Endgame.The snap's nature caused this. It did not end people; it unwilled them from existence.. People who died could not return. This is why Natasha did not return when the Hulk reversed Thanos's snap with one of his own. Peter Parker's death was sad, though. He returned, but it still hurt people.. People who were truly dead could not come back. Natasha did not return when the Hulk undid Thanos's snap with one of his own. Peter Parker's death was very sad, so even though he returned, it still hit people hard.

The scene needed to be emotional no matter what Tom Holland or Robert Downey Jr. did. They shared a father-son bond; Tony clearly cared for Peter like his own child. The script included the scene, and it was supposed to happen, but Holland improvised. It was improvised.Holland improvised a bit, making it harder to watch. When he said, "Mr. Stark, I don't feel good," followed by "I don't want to go," Holland was just ad-libbing.

Robert Downey Jr. ad-libbed the line telling Peter he was fine. Neither line was in the script, but the actors knew what their characters would say. They went for it. Holland described how they improvised while appearing in GQ.GQs "Actually Me." segment on the magazine's YouTube channel:

The scene is improvised because they did a long improv that was not great. But it sparked a great idea, and they reworked the scene, and this was made. So, it is improvised. A technique I use to cry is repeating a phrase. For example, if I was talking to someone and the scene's feeling was that I loved them, I would think, "I love you so much. I love you so much. I love you so much. I love you so much," and then it brings up emotion. In that scene, it was "I don't want to go," and I thought I would say it out loud. It works. It is really good in the film.

Groot Had To Perish To Bring The Guardians Together

Groot has gone through much in his many MCU appearances. He first appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy.Guardians of the Galaxy. He was an adult. After that film, he appeared as "Baby Groot," then as a teenager who ceased to exist for five years at the end ofAvengers: Infinity War.

His second death was sad, but the one that mattered most to the characters was hisGroot made a sacrifice at the end of.at the end ofGuardians of the Galaxy. As Ronan's vessel approached Xandar's surface, the Guardians faced doom. Seeing no other path, Groot spread his branches to surround his friends and protect them. Rocket saw this and knew his friend would die. He said, "We are Groot."

This moment felt contradictory to the character. Groot only said "I am Groot" throughout the movie. His words and sacrifice finally united the Guardians into a family. Groot had to die so the team could keep working together; they fought each other before.

Since the movie's release, James GunnJames Gunn confirmed Groot died. The Groot that grew from his branch was not a reborn version; it was a child. This solidified his sacrifice and created one of the film's most unique character arcs.

Erik Killmonger's Demise Was Modified By Chadwick Boseman

Erik Killmonger is a dynamic MCU villain because much of what he fought for held merit. He achieved his goals mercilessly, but he was right to change Wakanda's role. When his cousin killed him, the characters watched the sun set one last time on his homeland, which was deeply emotional.

The scene, and others, came from a collaboration between directorRyan CooglerHe explained how the creative process happened in a tribute in theLA Times published following Chadwick Boseman's passing:

While filming, we met at the office or my rental home in Atlanta to discuss lines and ways to add depth. We talked costumes and military practices. He told me, "Wakandans must dance during coronations. If they just stand with spears, what separates them from Romans?"

Boseman largely influenced the scene. Early drafts had Killmonger ask T'Challa to bury him in Wakanda, but Boseman questioned that. He asked, "What if Erik Killmonger asked to be buried somewhere else?" The scene changed then, ending up more powerful because the Black Lives Matter movement gained ground in the United States.

The scene shows the two watching the sunset as T'Challa tells his cousin he can be healed. He simply replies, "Why, so you can just lock me up? Nah. Just bury me in the ocean with my ancestors that jumped from the ships, 'cause they knew death was better than bondage."

Pietro Maximoff's Surprising End Was Always Part Of The Plan

Pietro Maximoff died at the end ofAvengers: Age of Ultron.Kevin Feige says this becauseKevin Feige., "It adds stakes to the ending of the film." He explained the scene showed repercussions for Ultron’s actions and solidified Scarlet Witch’s character and Wanda’s arc in the movie and future films.

Joss Whedon included some footage of Pietro at the end of the movie while putting it together. He was there when the new Avengers assembled, but it did not make the film. Whedon explained toEmpire.his thinking then: "We did actually shoot him in the last scene, in an outfit, with his sister. We also shot him waking up, saying, 'Ah, I didn’t really die from these 47 bullet wounds!' ...But the intent was to earn this, and then you have to stand by it."

Filming that scene did not change Pietro's death.it was part of the plan. He died in a surprising way; he saved Clint and the child he was rescuing. He said, "I bet you didn't see that coming," and most viewers agreed. His death was emotional, affecting Wanda—who was absent—showing the strong bond between the twins.

Yondu Udonta's Demise Paid Off During His Funeral

Yondu Udonta shows a character arc that moves from one extreme to the other. He first appeared as a villain who took Peter as a boy and threatened to eat him his whole life. By the end ofGuardians of the Galaxy., he is not irredeemable; he smiled after Peter gave him a Troll doll instead of the Power Stone.

When he returned forGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2., he became a more sympathetic character, and his death brought many people to tears. Yondu gave his life to save his adopted son, even going so far as tosay., "He may have been your father, boy, but he wasn't your daddy," and tears flowed as he died in Peter's arms.

The scene felt emotional, but Yondu's funeral expanded it. To prepare for the scene, director James Gunn told his brother Sean (who plays Kraglin) to watchOne Flew Over the Cuckoo's NestChristopher Lloyd's character features prominently. Gunn explained his scene prep in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter:

My brother mentioned the moment at the end of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's NestChristopher Lloyd's character cheers wildly at the end of the movie when Chief Will Sampson throws something out and breaks out. Lloyd said he loved playing that emotional scene and took time to feel ready.

Odin's Demise Was Changed From An NYC Alleyway To Norway

Since his first appearance in ThorThorOdin seemed immortal, incapable of dying. He was eons old and capable of great things, but in Thor: Ragnarok, the old man faded into light and floated away.Thor: RagnarokHela came and ended the sadness of the scene after Odin faded. His death remained important in the MCU.

An alternate scene had Thor and Loki stumble into Odin in a New York City alley. They talked with Odin before Hela killed him, which is a different path from the version where he peacefully passed with his sons nearby.

Director Taika Waititi explained why the scene changed in the final film during an Instagram Live.Instagram LiveDuring the Instagram Live, he watched the movie and spoke with Tessa Thompson and Mark Ruffalo, explaining the scene change.

The trailer showed Odin dying in New York. The filmmakers wanted to move them out of New York and set up the location for Asgard's new home.Avengers: EndgameThey wanted to set up this location earlier for Asgard's new home. Test audiences felt disappointed about Odin dying next to trash in an alley.

The final version, which made it to theaters, established Norway as Asgard's new home. This linked up despite many independent directors and writers in the MCU.

Vision Nearly Showed Up In A Post-Credits Scene After His End

Vision's demise in Avengers: Infinity WarVision suffered the most tragedy. He died twice, and both endings were heartbreaking. First, he convinced the woman he loved to destroy the Mind Stone in his forehead, knowing it would kill him. She knew this too; with all her strength, she stopped Thanos and destroyed the Stone. Thanos got the Time Stone from Dr. Strange, so he rewound time and took the Stone from Vision's head.

This killed Vision right away. He could not return when the Hulk undone Thanos's snap. He still exists in WandaVision appears in the MCU's Most Memorable Death Scenes., but his true reality stays a mystery. Setting that aside, the deaths in Vision appears in the MCU's Most Memorable Death Scenes during Infinity War.felt sad, pushing Wanda's character growth to its limit. This woman already lost her twin to Ultron. Losing the man she loved pushed her far past breaking point, giving it weight.

Few changes occurred in the scenes showing Vision's death. The Concept art shows Vision in the MCU's Most Memorable Death Scenes.shows almost the same thing. The Mind Stone tore from Vision's forehead, causing him to instantly perish and lose all color. Paul Bettany stated in an IMDb Vision's action 'Ask Each Other Anything' is in the MCU's Most Memorable Death Scenes.Elizabeth Olsen said he had a 10-15% chance of Vision returning for Vision appears in the MCU's Most Memorable Death Scenes in Avengers: Endgame.: appears in the MCU's Most Memorable Death Scenes.

At one point, I was in a tag, opening a body bag drawer, and there was Vision. Kevin [Feige] spoke to me, saying, "I have to get the shots." I reacted, "Ugh!" Because I really wanted that profit participation (laughs).

That post-credits scene was cut, but he got a new TV show with Olsen in WandaVision appears in the MCU's Most Memorable Death Scenes., which started in January 2021.

Gamora's Demise Was Always Intended To Be Irreversible

If there is one permadeath fans missed in Gamora appears in the MCU's Most Memorable Death Scenes in Avengers: Infinity War., it was Gamora. Throughout the movie, Thanos acted like a loving, caring father to her—in his own way, of course—so her death surprised people. When they revealed he had to give up what he loved most to get the Soul Stone, he regretfully grabbed Gamora and threw her to her end.

He showed regret for this act and mourned it, proving he loved her, but it was still a surprise. After the movie aired, the The Russo Brothers feature in the MCU's Most Memorable Death Scenes.talked about the scene and its effect on the MCU. When Thanos saw her in the Soul Stone at the end, they made it clear it was not really Gamora; she was gone:

To be clear, it is a spiritual version, and the Soul Stone has that power. But it shows his pain and guilt. I do not read much more into it.

Gamora came back through some time travel, but the version that returned in Endgame appears in the MCU's Most Memorable Death Scenes.Gamora never met Peter or joined the Guardians of the Galaxy. She dislikes Thanos, but her character changes mean the MCU will explore this in Phase IV.

Agent Phil Coulson Has Perished And Been Resurrected More Than Anyone Else In The MCU

Agent Phil Coulson was the secret agent everyone needed when the Avengers assembled. His death gave the team something to avenge. When he died inThe Avengers., Loki fooled him (and the audience) into thinking he pointed the BFG in his hands at the God of Mischief. Loki had a spear behind him and skewered everyone's favorite S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.

Now, Agent Coulsonhas died many times in the MCU. Being the main character ofMarvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., he returned to assemble his team. After that, he faked his death, died a couple of times in Season 5, and in a time-loop episode, he expired dozens of times—but those do not count. At the series end (SPOILER ALERT), he died for real and was brought back as a Life Model Decoy (LMD), keeping all his memories.

His biggest death was arguably inThe Avengers., which caused the team to become a unit. The scene played out mostly as written, though some edits occurred after the movie's release. To make the film seem less harsh for an international market, they lowered the severity of his end. In the UK DVD release ofMarvel Avengers Assemble. (that's the title across the pond), the spear tip that hit Coulson was removed entirely. Otherwise, it matches the American movie release.

Ultron's End Was More About Vision's Character Development

Ultron was a fascinating character James Spader brought to life. His silver voice made the android sound more human than it deserved, and his death shaped Vision's character. At the end ofAvengers: Age of Ultron., the main villain is defeated; only one version of him survives. Vision flies to him, they speak briefly, then Vision destroys his creator with the Mind Stone's power.

People online guess if Ultron survived this. They point to Vision's kind actions—he picked up Mjölnir after being born, after all. DirectorJoss Whedon.explained his death looked like the movie showed, even though the camera cut away the moment Vision blasted his creator:

I think Ultron is gone. For me, that's the cut to the gunshot. That's him dead. But, I work at Marvel. If I see Ultron in another movie later, I will neither be surprised nor disappointed.

Paul Bettany, who plays Vision in the MCU, said filming the scene with Spader was a big deal for him.

With me purple and James Spader in a fractal suit, which looks totally ridiculous, featuring a fractal hat and a rig with cameras and headlights tracking dots on his face. Everything falls away. You see an actor look you in the eyes. The ridiculousness of the role you play, or your color—you are a beautiful aubergine—vanishes. You are left only with someone's eyes and their honesty.

Ronan the Accuser's Demise Almost Set Up Yondu's

The Guardians of the Galaxy finally join hands at the end of the movie while Peter holds the Power Stone. They divert the destructive energy into Ronan the Accuser, destroying him completely. The scene fit the movie's structure. Peter started a dance-off against the villain to distract him while Rocket built a device to destroy his hammer.

The scene came together well. Filming followed the script closely. Something happened after that altered it.James Gunn is featured in 'MCU's Most Memorable Death Scenes'.He discussed this during a special. The scene involves the Guardians of the Galaxy.Live Commentary Q&A he hosted on his Facebook page. The change did not affect Ronan; it concerned Yondu.

In the original script (I wrote), Rocket had a bomb in this scene. Quill put it in the Orb when he gave it to Yondu. As Yondu flew away at the end, his entire ship exploded.

Fortunately, he did not take that path. Yondu's development in the next film was one of the best parts ofThe scene involves Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2..
