The Marvel Cinematic Universe, a model of successful superhero movies, features engaging characters who make some truly dumb choices. These complex personalities deal with their own morality and pride, which cloud their judgment. Our heroes want to save the world, but they also want to be seen as the smartest, fastest, and strongest. Unfortunately, this desire often leads to poor decisions. It's not just heroes who struggle - villains, leaders, and supporting characters also make foolish choices. In the MCU, any individual, human or otherwise, can let their ineptitude interfere with their plans. The bad decisions add humanity to these movies, making each character more relatable. We appreciate their human problems, but we won't let them off the hook for their stupid choices. Read on for the most ridiculous decisions in the MCU and decide for yourself if they're dumb.

In Avengers: Infinity War, Peter Quill punches Thanos and destroys half the universe.Avengers: Infinity War.Earth's Mightiest Heroes fight Thanos, who seeks six Infinity Stones to wipe out half the world and restore "balance." Every MCU hero unites to stop him. They confront Thanos on Titan, letting Mantis subdue him while Peter Parker and Tony Stark try to take the Infinity Stones from Thanos's hand. Peter Quill thinks only of Gamora, whom Thanos took and killed earlier in the film. When Quill learns Gamora is gone,He loses all sense of reason.Peter Quill punches Thanos multiple times. This punch breaks Mantis's weak link to Thanos, letting him regain strength, fight the heroes, grab another Infinity Stone, and vanish.
Quill's action destroys half the universe. The heroes had a chance to gain the upper hand; Quill ruined it stupidly. He felt pain losing his love, yet he ignored the bigger issue. His punches did not hurt Thanos. His punches would not bring Gamora back. Quill only let Thanos escape and cause chaos on Earth. This decision seems painfully foolish.

Drax the Destroyer is an unstable team member inGuardians of the Galaxy.Ronan killed his wife and daughter, and Drax seeks revenge above all else. However, his desire to defeat Ronan leads to poor choices. As the Guardians go to Knowhere to maybe sell the Orb to the Collector, Drax gets tired of waiting for Ronan. So, he calls the villain and tells him where he and the other Guardians are.
If Drax had a plan or knew what he faced, his call to Ronan might have made sense. But Drax has no plan to defeat Ronan. HeDrax informs Ronan of the Guardians' location so he can fight him., which fails against Ronan's great power. By rushing toward his foe, Drax endangers the whole team and lets Ronan seize the Infinity Stone in the Orb. His call ruins everything, and Drax gains nothing. This is a stupid, bad plan. Sorry, Drax.

Tony Stark is an egomaniac with narcissistic traits, but he shows he cares for Pepper Potts. He constantly tries to save her life, often apologizing for risking her safety. Still, Tony puts Pepper in danger inIron Man 3.
After Happy Hogan faced an attack, supposedly from the Mandarin, Tony Stark posted his home address on TV, inviting the Mandarin to strike. Tony did not send Pepper away, even though he expected a fight. Pepper asked Stark to leave, but he argued he could only protect her at home, despite expecting an attack. When Stark's house blew up, Tony and Pepper stayed home.Tony was oblivious to the incoming attack.Tony waited until it was too late.
Tony kept Pepper home after giving him his address. This decision shows selfishness and stupidity. Stark fights the attack poorly because he focuses on protecting Pepper. He quickly suits up and flees home, leaving Pepper alone. Sending her away right away would have protected his love and let him fight the attack.

In Captain America: The First AvengerSteve Rogers underwent Dr. Erskine's procedure and became a Super Soldier, the only successful transformation and the second one. Rogers showed off his new abilities fast when a German spy attacked the lab, killed Dr. Erskine, and stole the Super Soldier serum. Rogers chased the villain, using superhuman speed, agility, and strength no man possessed. However, Rogers's superiors made him perform instead of being a soldier. They put him in the United Service Organizations and sent him across the country, where heused his new fame to promote war bondsand performed music.
Steve Rogers is the first successful Super Soldier. He was made as a special weapon for the US armed forces to change WWII. After Erskine died, everyone decided Rogers should perform instead; none of his skills were being used well. This choice makes no sense. Why turn someone into a weapon and then make them perform music? This wastes useful skills, Rogers's talent, and everyone's time.

When Loki enlisted the Chitauri to help him conquer EarthThe Avengersthe world's strongest superheroes teamed up to defeat him. But they could not stop Dr. Selvig fromopening a portalopening a portal to the Chitauri home world lets the aliens invade Manhattan. The army looks scary and nearly unbeatable. The World Security Council, whose only goal is keeping people safe, quickly decided tolaunch an atomic device at Manhattan, ending millions of people to stop the Chitauri invasion.
How is that a right move? The Avengers just began fighting the Chitauri. They are still making a plan. Before they decide if they can stop the invasion without losing many human lives, the council decides to sacrifice millions out of fear the invasion will spread. An atomic device should be the final move, but the council chooses that first. With leadership like that, civilian lives are always at risk.

Doctor Strange's fatal flaw is a stupid, very human decision. He thinks he is invincible, which is egotistical.Strange drives his Lamborghini recklessly through the streets.Strange speeds, passes cars he shouldn't, and ignores the road. This causes an accident, injuring his hands and stopping him from practicing as a doctor.
Do we need to explain why this is stupid? The accident made Strange a Master of the Mystic Arts, but his reckless driving remains foolish. He risks himself and others and ruins his life. Strange also has the nerve to feel bad about himself when he caused the problem. Reckless driving is dangerous, even for a superhero.

InAvengers: Infinity WarGamora knows the Soul Stone's location. She desperately wants to keep the Stone from Thanos, knowing he seeks all six Infinity Stones to wipe out half the universe. Though Gamora and the Guardians know she holds the key to the Stone's location, they still think it is wise topursue Thanos alone.
Gamora wants to stop Thanos from getting another Infinity Stone from the Collector and making his power stronger. Gamora should have stayed far from Thanos. Gamora confronted her father, Gamora gave herself and the Soul Stone's location to the most dangerous being. If Thanos had not found Gamora, he would not have found the Soul Stone. Gamora's decision to face him is bold and heroic, but it ends up stupid.

Thor: Ragnarokstarts with many foolish choices. At the end ofThor: The Dark WorldLoki secretly returns to Asgard and rules as Odin. He sends his father away and hides in Odin's body to claim the crown. However, Lokiacts nothing like his dad. He replaces court members with foolish people like Skurge, builds a giant statue of Loki, puts on plays praising Loki's sacrifice, and generally acts differently from his father.
Loki should have acted more like his father to rule as Odin. Asgardians should have spotted Loki's trick. Why does Thor have to tell everyone the truth when it is obvious? All Asgardians, including Loki, lack sharp tools.

The first MCU film shows Tony Stark captured by the Ten Rings. Assassins showed him their Stark Industries weapons. They demanded he build Jericho, his new advanced weapons system. Ten Rings supplied Stark with everything to build a destructive device. Instead of Jericho, Stark made a tiny arc reactor.Stark created a tiny arc reactor.Stark built the first rough Iron Man suit. He used the suit to escape captivity. This ruined the Ten Rings' plan to get Jericho and ended many of them.
The mistake was the Ten Rings knowing Stark is smart. They knew Jericho's final look. They did not know the device's shape during assembly. The language gap made communication hard. They could not track Stark's progress. Despite obstacles, Ten Rings gave Stark weapons and wrongly assumed he would not fight back. Giving a captive full weapons and hoping compliance is wrong.

Loki makes many poor choices in the MCU. One impulsive choice happens inThor: Ragnarok.DuringHela confronts Thor and Loki. After Odin died, Hela showed her power. She caught Mjolnir when Thor threw it. The hammer broke into a million pieces. Loki saw his and his brother were no match for Hela. He panicked and asked to return through the Bifrost.
Loki acts out of fear. He seeks return to Asgard, believing he will be safe. This choice lets Hela follow her brothers into the Bifrost, push them out of the portal, and reach Asgard. Hela wreaks havoc on Asgardians and seizes the throne. She traps Loki and Thor in an unknown place, preventing them from finding their way home. Hela's power means Loki's poor choice made things worse for everyone.

InGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,We meet Taserface, perhaps one of the dumbest characters in the MCU. Taserface acts idiotic and fails to lead the Ravagers after a mutiny against Yondu. Taserface's major failing is underestimating Groot. Even though Baby Groot follows Rocket, Taserface lets the tree wander the ship after humiliating him. A smart Taserface would have known Baby Groot would help his friends, even as a baby.
Taserface makes a fatal mistake.Baby Groot grabs a prototype fin.Baby Groot lets Yondu escape his cell and kill every Ravager who turned against him. Baby Groot may be small and quiet, but he is part of the Guardians. If he had been locked up, the Ravagers might have held Rocket and Yondu captive and avoided their own end. Taserface learned a lesson: Never underestimate Groot.

At the end ofCaptain America: The First Avenger,Steve Rogers commands a plane loaded with missiles set to hit major American cities. To stop the plane from reaching the East Coast of the United States, Rogers crashes the craftinto a glacier below him.
However, no one searches for Steve for some reason. Howard Stark finds the Tesseract in the Arctic waters, giving him an idea of where Rogers' plane crashed. Seventy years later, scientists find Rogers and the craft buried under ice. If his comrades launched a recovery effort immediately, Rogers and the plane would not be buried under ice. Rogers would not be frozen for 70 years. Howard Stark and Peggy Carter both assume Rogers is dead, shrug, and move on. They do not search for him; retrieving his body is lazy. The Tesseract is important enough to save, but Steve is not—some friends they are.

At the end ofThor: The Dark World,Volstagg and Sif take the Aether,The Reality Stone, also known as the Reality Stone, goes to the Collector. They argue they cannot keep the Stone on Asgard because keeping it near the Tesseract is unsafe. Even if that holds true, why trust the Collector with the Stone?
The Collector. The Collector keeps a huge collection of interstellar relics, objects, and specimens. He got many items through illegal means. He wants what he wants; he does not care how he gets it. The Collector shows no moral example, so why would the Warriors Three trust him with one of existence's most powerful objects? The Collector does not use the Stone for evil, mostly because he lacks all six Infinity Stones. This lack of protection lets Thanos get the Reality Stone and continue his plan to destroy half of all living things in the universe.
If you have an object that causes massive destruction, you must protect it well. Giving the Reality Stone to the Collector seems a random, senseless choice that helps Thanos win.

Then, Lang takes it further by randomly pressing buttons on a guarded object he knows nothing about.
Scott does not know what the suit does or its purpose. He proceeds, messing with it without fear for himself. Putting yourself in a strange, unexplained object and then being surprised by weird events is just stupid.

The Maximoff twins blame Stark for their parents' deaths, so they first agree to work with Ultron.Wanda and Pietro agree to work with Ultron. They turn on Ultron after discovering his real plan.
Wanda and Pietro's decision to team up with Ultron is foolish. Ultron is a giant robot the twins know nothing about. He speaks nicely, saying he dislikes the Avengers. They immediately plan to fight the most powerful superheroes and bring them down. Wanda cannot see Ultron's true goals in his mind. They trust him with zero proof of his words. Anger and the need for revenge drive them. Joining a villain and then being surprised by his evil is just naive.

Ronan the Accuser, the main villain inGuardians of the Galaxy.Ronan wants the Orb to trade it with Thanos for Thanos to destroy Xandar. Peter Quill beats Ronan's henchman and gets the Orb. Ronan must choose which Thanos daughter to send after Quill. He chooses Gamora, which is a bad choice for Ronan.
Gamora is Thanos's favorite daughter. She beats her sister, Nebula, showing she is faster, stronger, and better. Nebula stays loyal to her father. She will do anything for his approval. Gamora cannot match Nebula's loyalty.
Smart Ronan would have followed Nebula's wish to please her father and sent her for the Orb. Instead, Ronan picks Gamora. This lets the less-committed daughter betray her father and keep the Orb. This choice ruins Ronan's plans and causes his defeat. If Ronan chose Nebula, he might have won and destroyed the world he hated.
