Worst Fears Come True on Drugs

About this list

Most people's psychedelic experiences are pleasant, but sometimes disaster strikes. A natural disaster, storm, earthquake, or terrorist attack can turn a trip into a nightmare. Users react differently, with laughter, fear, or a calm demeanor. Social media sites like Reddit have given users a platform to share their stories. Some tales are tame, like weathering a storm on shrooms, while others are devastating, like the dramamine user haunted by an earthquake or the acid user who witnessed a mirror shatter. These are the stories of people who faced natural disasters while high on hallucinogens.

"Intense" is One Word For It

From redditorSoSickIMinAHospital"I rode out Hurricane Katrina on five hits of great LSD. It was amazing. It destroyed everything around us. We spent the next few days on an acid binge, convinced we were in Mad Max times. It was intense.

High on Meth and Giggling During 9/11

    From Redditormyc_taco:

"This was the first time I went to school spun out... My class watched a plane smash into the WTC. I giggled. (I know, I'm an insensitive prick) When the bell rang, class ended, I walked to my next class, yelling, 'You guys really messed up this time. Canada is attacking.'

I am Canadian. I went to high school in Southeastern Oklahoma.

"Earthquake on Dramamine: The Ultimate Nightmare"

    From bluelight.org userGeorge666:

"Everything described below happened on May 22 in Sofia, Bulgaria. At 3 AM, one hour after eating ten Dramamine pills and about one kilogram of beer while watching a dubstep creation tutorial online, I felt shaking and ugly noises. First, I thought this was a new trip moment, separate from usual hallucinations and sounds and body tremors. But after two or three seconds, hearing my dad's screams, I knew this was a real earthquake!

"Words cannot describe the terrible fear I felt and the thoughts of despair and helplessness racing through my head. My parents and I got out of the shaking building with many neighbors. The bright colors seemed like a dream, but I felt a strong evil presence and damnation everywhere. One or two minutes after leaving, aftershocks began, making things worse. [...] Absolute horror, slowed time perception, and feelings of helplessness grew stronger due to the pills."

"After this, I walked in the park with my family, feeling the strongest shock ever. Because of the Dramamine, I felt out of this world with slurred speech, trouble walking, and chest pains. [...] The fear and evil presence remained, but I saw increasing positive energy from people walking nearby in the park. Sad feelings faded, replaced by empathy. Everything got brighter, and the positive energy grew stronger. Human figures appeared, disappeared, and changed into unrecognizable shapes. I felt like I was part of something bigger, a spectacular and scary event at once, with the city looking better than ever."

At 4 AM, I got to a shop and bought a croissant. The taste felt incredibly intense, like eating something from another world (and using dramamine or weed never felt that good). The intense experience probably made me appreciate everything more. Then, I felt depressed, anxious, and doomed for ten days straight, unlike ever before. I faced a mental breakdown, fearing my life could end any moment. I suffered from insomnia, panic attacks, despair, tremors, and constant shaking while sleeping or sitting, even seeing hallucinations of shaking earth while walking to a shop.

Other Than the Crippling Fear, it Was a Great Trip

    From redditorslamletthebotsbeboys:

"I peaked on 1mg of LSD, the highest dose I ever took, during the August 2011 earthquake in Virginia. It started slow, a ripple in my water glass. Then my friend asked what happened, and I saw the mirror shaking. Everything shook violently, the mirror fell, and shattered. I watched my reflection fall in the mirror; it looked like I shattered. I have never been that scared.

    Tripping Balls During a Tornado

    From reddtorimpetus6:

"I unknowingly rode the edge of a tornado while on mescaline and mushrooms one time.Everythinggot dark around the car, and all I saw were pulsing purple, green, and pink geometric halos and a deep hum. I assumed it was just heavy rain and I was peaking. I wish I could capture the vision of rounding the bend north on 30 as the sun set, city lights appeared, I drove into a vicious storm, and I tripped. Have you ever seenBladerunnerWash one of those cityscapes in amber, and southwest/Santa Fe; imagine you are on the verge of a major epiphany.

When You're Rolling MDMA During a Quake, What Matters Is the Music

"Southern California. At a rave, an earthquake hit. Rolling on MDMA, I saw all the fixtures (light poles, etc.) swaying. First, I thought it was the MDMA, but then the music stopped suddenly."

Everyone stayed calm except the DJ. He panicked, telling people to chill. Chants like 'Where's the music?' started. Nobody cared. Lights hit all, and we were told to leave the building, single file. We went to the parking lot and kept the party going there. People used their car stereos for music. We left about an hour later. My friend was really shaken, so I spent most of my time keeping him steady.

They closed the venue later. They read about the roof collapsing on that place (Masterdome, for those who know the early 2000s rave scene). No one was inside.

Stranded During a Lightning Storm - But They Had Shrooms, So It Was Cool

I was stuck on an island on shrooms during a lightning storm. Rain and wind made kayaking out impossible. We had three hours until we could leave. We had blankets, three logs, and rain gear; we waited safely.

I hid under the blankets, watching my hallucinations change color. When lightning struck close, my friend started freaking out. I got out from under the blankets and sobered up. We sat and talked until it was safe to leave.

It wasn't a huge disaster, but we were alone. It took over two hours to get back into cell range and call home to tell my husband I was fine. He spoke to the sheriff when he got my text. The dosage was not very strong. Still, here is one story for you.

It's the Weed! Nope, It's an Earthquake!

From redditormember_member5thNovember: "I took a high dose of prescription amphetamines and some pot during the New England (small) earthquake last year. I did not realize it happened until my school's alert system told me. My building shook clearly, and I just thought it was the drugs.

Fond Memories of Wandering Around in a Blizzard on Shrooms

Wandering in a snowstorm on a high dose of mushrooms is one of my fondest memories.

Being 'lost' in an abandoned camp ground or conservation area while on mushrooms was
    also a lot of fun.

9/11 + Wake and Bake = Bad Trip

From redditorazchocula: "My 22nd birthday. I planned a day off work and pulled a wake and bake. About twenty minutes later, a friend called and told me to turn on the TV. That day was seriously grim. On top of the horror, I thought about many things I did not want to consider.
