Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy brought a darker, grittier Gotham to the big screen. The series took Bruce Wayne worldwide, with villains' master plans growing more complex with each film. But Nolan's deep Batman mythology also created plot holes. Fans point out inconsistencies like the Joker's attack on Bruce Wayne's party in The Dark Knight going unreported. Others question Bane's CIA airplane takeover in The Dark Knight Rises, calling it flawed and unnecessary. Many wonder how Commissioner Gordon keeps his job despite the chaos in his office. Check out this list of puzzling plot holes that have left Batman fans scratching their heads.

Ra's Al Ghul's Water Vaporizer Would Kill Everyone

Ra's Al Ghul's Water Vaporizer Would Kill Everyone in 'Plot Holes In Nolan's Batman Trilogy'.Redditor /u/Jeri_da_yogi_bear:

The microwave transmitter vaporizes all water supply. This vaporizes all water, including humans living in cucumbers at 63% water. Gothamites will not panic; they will be vaporized before they can.

    Police Don't Remove Joker's Disguise

    From Redditor /u/axlee:

In The Dark Knight (2008), halfway through the movie, Commissioner Gordon finally captures The Joker with Batman's help.

They bring The Joker to the police station to find out who he is. They try fingerprints, DNA, dental work, clothing brands... but they never get a clear identity from him.

Wait a minute. They tested DNA right away, before even cleaning the clown make-up The Joker wears?

If I want to find out who a disguised person is, checking their identity is the first step, right?

Joker's School Bus Definitely Stands Out

    From Redditor /u/wosh:

When the Joker robs the bank, he loads the cash into a school bus and pulls out into a line of buses as cop cars race by. How does no one notice debris falling off the buses? Kids talk and laugh, so the buses aren't empty and drivers are paid off.

Batman Doesn't Tell Gordon That The Clowns Are Hostages

    From Redditor /u/Misaria:

Batman pursues The Joker, who holds hospital staff hostage, and asks Gordon for five minutes to try alone.
Gordon threatens to shoot Batman but lets him go, saying "Two minutes, then we breach..."

Batman immediately sees the clowns with guns are the real hostages.
He tells Fox this but does not alert Gordon, tell Fox to alert him, or tell the SWAT team. Instead, Batman beats up all of them to stop them from shooting the hostages. That fight time could have let him tell at least one of them what is happening. They do not shoot right away; they tell the clowns to drop their weapons, etc.

Batman says nothing when SWAT surrounds him. At that point, they do not know the clowns are the bait and the ones dressed as doctors are the bad guys.

When the Joker wants Coleman Reese dead, Bruce tells Alfred to send a message to Gordon about which officer he should watch out for.

The Pit In 'The Dark Knight Rises' Is Confusing

    From Redditor /u/NotSure2505:

Where was it? Who kept it? It did not seem guarded.

How did it get electricity for a TV? Where were the wires? Or the closed circuit cable that fed 24/7 Gotham CNN? Could those be used to climb out?

Who was kept inside? How did they get food? How were plumbing and sanitation handled?

Was the prison private or government-run?

When Bruce escapes, a rope waited at the top. Why did no one outside throw the rope down?

Prisoners had basic tools and rope. Why couldn't they make a grappling hook to climb out?

Gotham Couldn't Recover From Scarecrow's Toxin

    From Redditor /u/luxou95:

This logic hit me the morning after watching this movie. I searched the net for this plot hole. I found many recurring ones (taking showers, boiling kettles, water in humans), but not this one.

After the Scarecrow sprays Rachel with the drug, Batman rushes her to the Batcave for the antidote. Before sedating her, he tells her more time means permanent insanity.

This took about an hour. Later, Ra's al-Ghul infects an island with the toxin. Fox shows developing the antidote from the vial takes weeks. Gotham faces panicked criminals until the antidote arrives; victims will be very insane by then.

The CIA Makes A Weak Bluff Against Bane

    From Redditor /u/XSh0ckX:

On the plane scene, after one guy refuses the CIA, he shoots without aiming, saying, "He didn't fly so good." This tries to get others to talk. Bane later exposes him. Still, the plan was flawed from the start. Nothing stops the guy who was shot from saying, "Hey guys, I didn't get shot, and I'm still on this airplane, CIA is just bluffing!"

Bane Doesn't Know Bruce Wayne Has Returned

    From Redditor /u/Death_Star_:

Main plot holes: How does Bane seem to be the last on his team to learn Bruce Wayne is back in Gotham? Should he have known sooner? Should someone have told him? This knowledge is vital for Bane's plan to work.

Setup: Batman fights and loses to Bane. Bane's men watch. During this, Bane announces Bruce Wayne is Batman and proves it by blowing up his company building, showing off Batman toys.

Bane's men know Bruce Wayne is Batman.

Bruce is exiled to The Pit, partly to torture Wayne and partly to keep Bruce from stopping the plan in Gotham.

Bruce returns. Bane learns about it the night before the bomb explodes, maybe six to eight hours before he was first captured, unarmed, and unmasked. Bane sees the flaming bat insignia and says skeptically, "Impossible..." Those hours, while Bane does not know Bruce is back, let Bruce suit up, play with Gotham's bridge, rescue Gordon from the ice, and save 2,000 police officers.

If Bane knew an unarmed Bruce Wayne was just detained, we all know Bane would not let Bruce suit up.

    Bane's Plane Takeover Is Unneccesary

    FromRedditor /u/Raging_Horse_Cock:

Bane and two men pretend to be captured mercenaries. Bane tells the CIA agent he needs to know what Dr. Pavel told them. Why did he need the plane? They had Dr. Pavel in the car in the first scene. Everyone else in that car was bad. They could have just not shown up and questioned him themselves. They could have killed the CIA agents easier. If faking Pavel's death was the goal, they could have done the blood transfusion and then mutilated the body until only a blood test could identify it, since that is likely what happened in the crash. They finished exactly as they started, except for one pointless sacrifice.

Joker Terrorizing Wayne's Party Doesn't Make The News

    FromRedditor /u/jackandgrapes:

For as long as I have lovedThe Dark Knight, this hole has been bothering me, but I have never heard anyone else mention it.

The Joker crashes a high society party and throws Rachel out a window. Batman jumps to save her (and survives falling 30 stories). The next day shows no mention of what happened in Bruce Wayne's penthouse after a madman with armed thugs left him hunting Harvey Dent in a house full of innocent people.

    Gordon Shouldn't Know Bane's Name

    FromRedditor /u/Raging_Horse_Cock:

Commissioner Gordon enters the sewers to chase the gunmen. He gets hurt and Bane takes him. Gordon escapes, gets shot, and Officer Blake finds him. Blake tells Bruce Wayne that Gordon talked about an underground army and a masked man named Bane. Gordon never hears Bane's name. It does not appear once during his time in the sewers, so how would he know?

Batman Couldn't Have Flown The Bomb Far Enough Away

    FromRedditor /u/estrtshffl:

They say earlier, their makeshift nuclear bomb is four megatons with a six-mile blast radius. I am not a nuclear physicist, so I will accept those numbers as fact.

Batman says goodbye to Catwoman, then gets into his small helicopter. Do you recall what Fox said about the thing? He said it was made for urban crowd control. He said urban something, which matters later. Inside the machine, there is a shot of the bomb's clock. It shows something like 1:30, plus or minus 5-10 seconds. Okay.

Batman flies out of the city, he gets over water. Thirty seconds passed since we saw the clock.

Batman flies over the water; the bomb explodes. This craft was built for cities, not 360 miles per hour. The world record for the fastest helicopter is 299 mph, set by the Sikorski X2.

    Bane's Plane Crash Didn't Require A Sacrifice

    From Redditor /u/htallen:

During the plane crash, the CIA agent questions Bane's men. The agent tells them the flight plan he filed lists only one of the three planes. Later, Bane tells one man they must die because "they expect one of us in the wreckage". However, the man listed in the flight plan is clearly a bluff, as Bane points out, "Why would you shoot someone before throwing them out of the plane?" Bane must know the updated flight plan would list all three or none if the CIA agent never called it in, since all three men were unexpected cargo. Thus, Bane's man did not need to stay behind; that was a needless sacrifice, raising more questions than answers for crash investigators.

    Gordon Shouldn't Have A Job

    From Redditor /u/Death_Star_:

TLDR -- Gordon shouldn't be a cop, much less commissioner. The city knows he worked with a mass murderer and assassin constantly. The Dent Act passage makes no sense if it stems from his murder, because it fights organized crime, yet Dent was "killed" by Batman—the opposite of organized crime (one criminal).
