A bully boss made me miserable. I was broke and needed a job, so I had few choices. The bullying grew worse. I went to HR. This happened before I knew HR protects employees.

Nothing happened after the HR meeting. That comment apparently reached her. At the company party, bosses gave employees small gifts. Co-workers got gift certificates for massages. I got a tin bank that read, "I'm saving up for some therapy."

A guy I dated bought me Victoria's Secret underwear. The bra was two cup sizes too big because I did not want breast surgery, but he thought they were too small. He said, "Wow, if you were like a really full C or D cup, your body would be perfect!"

In middle school, during my tomboy phase, "Santa" gave me a book called How to Raise a Lady. When I opened it, my mom just looked at me and said, "Maybe Santa is trying to give a hint."

I lost my retainer at a Denny's when I was younger. We searched everywhere, including the dumpster for thirty minutes. My parents got furious. A month later, the new iPod dropped. I told my parents that was my only Christmas want.

At Christmas, we opened gifts. I found one matching the iPod box shape. Unwrapping it revealed the new iPod! I jumped up, hugged my parents, and jumped with joy. I sat down and opened the box again; inside was a new retainer. No iPod.

My rich friends gave me a cardboard house for my cat, saying, "If things get bad, you can live in it too."

Flowers from my in-laws went to "Mrs. TheirLastName." I kept my name, and they knew it.

    From Redditor /u/explodedsun:

My ex-girlfriend gave me an alarm clock. She said I was always late for work.

We did not live together or share an area code. I only saw her on days I did not work. I was not always late for work. I had a working alarm clock.

She said, "If you don't like it, I can take it back for something you do like," which you shouldn't take advantage of. I took her up on that offer, given how things were going.

She was really annoyed. Maybe I should have gotten her some records? I don't know. That does not stand out as much as the mess did.

    From Redditor /u/HappyGiraffe:

My sister-in-law is a problem. She constantly starts Go Fund Me campaigns for house work, trips, sperm to start a family, and other things. She is just exhausting.

One year, she gave me a rock for Christmas. I opened it and said, "Oh...cool..." She then gave a ten-minute speech about how she slept with the rock to get energy and "help guide me," telling me I should sleep with the rock too, so we could get "closer."

The next year, another Go Fund Me appears. This time, she wants to hike part of the Appalachian Trail.

I am broke now. I am finishing a Master's degree; I have a new baby. I will not give her money for her "finding herself" trips.

But I decide I want to give her something.

At her vacation kickoff party, which she threw herself into (not kidding), I brought her a gift I thought about a lot. I told her to take it for safekeeping, to remind her of her family waiting for her return from New Hampshire.

I passed her a 15 lb slab of granite from my backyard.

Deadfaced told her I wanted her to carry it in her pack for her trip because it had good energy.

    The look was priceless.

My mother does not get along with her sister. So she gave her nephew a recorder on his first birthday.

She gave a recorder to a toddler. I repeat.

My sister was overseas for Christmas, but she thoughtfully left me Trinny and Susannah's How to Dress for Your Body Type book. I gave it to her the next year. We trade gifts back and forth.

My mother-in-law visited last Thanksgiving and made a big deal about my serving dishes not matching. For Christmas, I got a whole serving set from her with a note saying, "A lady's table is her greatest masterpiece for her husband, so don't sit him down to a kindergarten drawing."

    From Redditor /u/pendingsweet:

I am the passive-aggressive one, so I am not sure if this counts, but here it is.

My aunt waits for gifts for months. You must visit her on Christmas Day with a gift—or her birthday, Easter, etc.—or she will be vile. If you do not say thank you within an hour of receiving something, she will make you regret it in many creative ways.

Easter or later, she opens her Christmas presents and sends her thanks. She shows great self-control. They sat by the tree and the fire until the tree fell. They remained alone, showing her trauma from her parents lying about Santa Claus.

Three years ago, I bought her kippers. She had to open them on New Year's eve to find the smell.

My sister bought me dish soap around age 12. I refused to wash the dishes well. This was a plan to avoid washing them. I thought doing a bad job would force my siblings to wash them instead. This backfired.

A big red bow tied around a basket of clean, unfolded laundry I kept in the basement for weeks. (I got real presents, but that one stays with me.)
