This makes sense because basements are dark and scary. Since many Hat Man meetings happen when someone is about to sleep, just woke up, or already asleep, the Hat Man appearing in a bedroom fits.Lots of witnesses met the Hat Man as children and kept the stories secret for years, either fearing being called crazy or not believing the story.Former Reddit user /u/Strangelyydazed shared their Hat Man story:

Former Reddit user /u/Strangelyydazedshared their Hat Man story:
My ex-boyfriend always talked about shadow people. He saw the top hat man and the man in the fedora. He claimed the top hat man warned him about bad things. I thought he was crazy and ignored it. Two months later, I started seeing the man in the hat near our bed. He would lean over me. My boyfriend later assaulted several girls violently. I read that he might appear near evil people or dangerous areas. I also saw a different shadow man in the car at night with him. I told my boyfriend what I saw. He said this man appeared when death happened. Ironically, the next day, a doctor told me I had a miscarriage last night. Since we broke up, I have not seen shadow people.

I saw him at eighteen years old in my room after a traumatic experience.
I woke up very late, maybe two or three. I did not check, but something felt wrong. I spoke in a language I have never heard. I spoke to what I can only call a young girl, or something with a young girl's body, maybe fourteen in a dress. I could not see her face, but I saw her eyes and mouth, which looked 'sharp looking,' like a human piranha. She whispered something in my ear, and I answered in this strange language.
But it was not just this shadow girl. Tall, dark figures surrounded my bed; I could not see their features, maybe four besides the girl. They sat still, watching me. The most striking figure was a tall man in a wide-brimmed hat in the corner. I felt he was amused, more so than the others. Every time the girl whispered, I gave a reply I did not understand, and the man in the hat became delighted. One would think he would fear this meeting, but it felt familiar! I felt warm, like old friends or family surrounded me.
I forgot to add that I researched this meeting and found a startling similar story. The person had almost the same experience, except they did not speak another language or anything. The little girl was yelling into their ear, not whispering like she did for me. Very strange.

Many people know no one knows who the Hat Man really is. He might be an interdimensional being or an astral projection, like Shadow People.Theories exist about what Shadow People actually are.and why humans see them, and the Hat Man may have a similar explanation. Perhaps he is an interdimensional being, visiting humanity from another dimension and only partially visible because he vibrates differently than us. He could also be an astral projection, the shadow of a person leaving their human body. A demon is a possibility, based on the negative feelings people have toward him.
People suggest the Hat Man is an alien, a time traveler, or a ghost. Witnesses also offer wild ideas. Science offers no way to test these thoughts. Thus, the Hat Man stays a creepy mystery.
