Today, comic books make headlines for taking progressive steps. Major publishers are making surprisingly inclusive moves, tackling social issues and increasing diversity in flagship titles. But being socially progressive in comics wasn't always accepted. In fact, it was once considered controversial to portray female or minority characters in positions of authority. Despite this, comic books have a history of pushing boundaries. They've addressed serious issues like racism, featuring real-life figures who embodied it, in subversive and inspirational ways - long before it was cool.
