Throughout history, real exorcisms have occurred, rooted in diverse belief systems across religions and cultures about demons and casting them out. However, many people attempt exorcisms without professional help, assuming possession. The Catholic Church acknowledges demon existence and expulsion but carefully examines cases, requiring Vatican approval for exorcisms. Even with approval, there are no guarantees of success or a normal life afterward. Exorcisms pose physical and mental dangers, often resulting in tragic deaths, as seen in these devastating cases of exorcisms gone wrong.

Anneliese Michel grew up Catholic. She did well in school. She lived as a happy, normal 16-year-old. Then, she grew withdrawn. She slowly started showing signs of epilepsy. Her family took her to a psychiatric hospital. They gave her anti-convulsion drugs. These drugs made things worse. She started seeing things, maybe from the drugs. She claimed she saw “demon faces.”
Anna Michel’s mental state worsened. The hallucinations got worse. She showed signs of schizophrenia and psychosis. She prayed hard. Soon, she feared holy objects. She believed she was “damned” and “would rot in hell.” She had violent outbursts. She ate insects. She drank her own urine. Her religious parents wanted a priest. They asked the Catholic Church for an exorcism. The Church denied them multiple times. It was 1973. She showed the same behavior as Regan in The Exorcistwhen the film was released.
Father Ernst Alt met the young girl. He felt demonic possession. He and priest Arnold Renz got permission for exorcism rites. Anneliese stopped all medical treatment. This action was very dangerous. She stopped all mood stabilizers, anti-psychotics, and anti-seizure drugs. The two priests performed sixty-seven ritual exorcisms over Anneliese in ten months. Anneliese only got worse. Anneliese named demonic entities inside her as Nero, Hitler, Judas, Cain, and Lucifer.
Near the end, Anneliese refused food. She said she wanted to atone for her youth’s sins. On July 1, 1976, after two exorcisms a week for almost a year, Anneliese Michel died from starvation and severe dehydration at her parents' home. She weighed only 30 pounds. She had pneumonia. Both her knees were broken. Priests and Mr. and Mrs. Michel faced negligent homicide charges. These charges later dropped to manslaughter due to medical negligence. All parties were found guilty.
