As a big road tripper, I love Podcasts. Season one of Serial is amazing. Stuff You Should Know is a perfect 30-40 minute show with hundreds of episodes. Giants of History is my favorite.

Pee every time a toilet is available, whether you need to or not.

Bring a paper map for where you are going. It is old school, but if your phone dies or loses service or breaks, you will have the physical map.

Having driven across the US a couple of times:

Clean your car inside and out. You will enjoy yourself more with a clean interior and clean windows.

Start early in the morning and drive during the day to enjoy the scenery.

Switch drivers or take a break every 100 miles.

Do not plan for more than 6 hours on the road each day.

Scenic, winding mountain roads get tiring. You will be glad to be back on the interstate.

Play all your music almost alphabetically. You will hear every song on the list without repeating songs. You might hear songs you forgot about. Song names are random, so it feels like you are still on a random trip.

Hungry? Find a grocery store, not a restaurant. The deli offers hot and cold ready-made food for much less.

Buy a sleep mask for when you are not driving. The sun always irritates you and stops your concentration.

Do not buy a neck pillow. Some are okay, but you lack flexibility in movement, and the seat position is not comfortable. Bring two pillows, put one on each side, and lower your seat. This lets you lie on your side comfortably on a soft surface.

    Bring a portable charger.

Buy a month's subscription to Youtube Red and Spotify. This lets you watch and listen to offline content while you are in the middle of nowhere.

If you road-trip through the southern US, Chick-Fil-A has the nicest and cleanest bathrooms of any fast-food chain.

Do not schedule your time too much. Things happen, and falling off schedule might stress you out.

Pack snack foods you will actually enjoy. My family used to pack trail mix, peanuts, and Chewie bars because they were typical 'road trip foods,' but nobody ate that junk.

For long road trips, find an ideal stopping point. Check hotels in that town, then check hotels an hour before and an hour after your daily stop. Some days you might find more time to drive. Other days, you will find you fall short.

Have fun! Road trips should be fun!

From Redditor u.FlourMogul.Plan your driving breaks ahead of time. Spending half an hour in a state park beats a rest stop off the Interstate.

    From Redditor u/Nonsenseinabag:

Get off the interstate and take small highways if you have time. You will see much of the country most people miss, and it feels much more relaxing. Avoid major suburban areas; they often have the worst traffic.

    From Redditor u/PlatypuSofDooM42:

Take short breaks at least every two hours.

Change drivers often; do not drive until you are exhausted.

Plan trips to hit big cities outside rush hour. Google Maps offers a tool to check traffic patterns from past days.

Someone already said check hotels on either side of your planned stopping point.

If stopping in large cities, check local sports schedules. These games affect parking and open roads.

    From Redditor u/DSMB:

Service your car regularly. Check oil, coolant, and tire pressure often (never check coolant while hot). Do not check oil when it is hot either; do these things before you leave.

Bring some spare oil if you think the car might burn oil.

Bring plenty of water. You need water to drink and water to top up coolant if needed. My radiator cap came off randomly, and steam came from under the hood. There was little water left.

    From aformer Redditor:

Bring toilet paper. Need it, especially in remote areas—sometimes you must pull over and go. Wal-Mart sells five-gallon jugs for water; they are very useful.

I like a cooler with various things. Then I can stop at a rest stop for about 30 minutes for a decent lunch or dinner.

I have driven solo across the entire USA several times, from Washington state to Alaska several times.

    From Redditor u/Sherman_Hills:

Do not hurry. A road trip's point is not to reach the destination fastest. Stop and talk to locals about the best food, places to visit, or where to stay. Talk to several locals; they have different views. Try new things. Why drive across the country just to eat or see the same things you have at home?
