About this list

Satan has the worst reputation in the Bible. He's described as a serpent, snake, dragon, and embodiment of sin and evil. People hate him, seeing him as God's antithesis with the power to possess souls and bring the apocalypse. But the actual story is different. In the Bible, Satan isn't that powerful - he's just a fallen angel, similar to God's other created beings. He's not even the ruler of Hell, just another prisoner. In literature, Satan is often portrayed differently from the red-horned devil people hate. He's an anti-hero who opposed God's strict rule and suffered for it. These facts show Satan might not be so diabolical after all.

ThroughoutInferno, Satan appears as one of the universe's most powerful, evil beings. Dante's whole trip focuses on this final meeting, but once it happens, the action stops.

In Dante's poem, Satan is not an all-powerful monster or a master planner. He is just afallen angel stuck in ice. His worst act is eating other cursed souls—a punishment from God. To show Satan betrayed God, this circle holds those guilty of the same sin, and the souls the Devil eats are theinfamous traitorsBrutus, Cassius, and Judas.
