Disgruntled vegans, a family of 10 wanting a table before closing, and a woman attacking a waiter for saving her date's life - these are just a few of the brutal and hilarious stories shared on the subreddit Tales from Your Server. They prove that waiters are the most underappreciated and underpaid workers.

My first day at a pizza restaurant happened. This place always gets slammed. I learned how to be a good server here. Before this, I worked at overstaffed burger joints or Italian restaurants. Things moved fast, but I performed surprisingly well. I managed about 10 tables; I usually handled 3-4. I will never forget a couple who sat at table 24. They were an old couple, both gray-haired and overdressed for a pizza place. I gave them excellent service despite my nerves starting a new job. I felt good handling all my tables...until I made a mistake. The man at table 24 gave me his card to close. I was busy. I did not have time for anything else.
I swipe his card on the computer. I forgot to print the itemized receipt, which can be frustrating. The man at table 24 had every right to be upset. Instead of asking for the receipt, he loudly told me in a small room, with a deep, firm tone, how terrible I was at my job. He claimed that was why I only worked at a pizza shop. He kept making those terrible comments and would not let me leave when I tried. Now, all my other tables saw me get attacked, and I was overwhelmed after being yelled at by him. The owner must have entered. He saw the man yelling at me, approached the table, and did the worst thing I have ever seen.
Owner: “Excuse me sir, I own this place. I do not know the problem and I do not care. What I care about is you insulting my waitress. So I will ask you and your wife to leave and not return to my restaurant.”
Man at table 24: “Fine, but you will lose our business.”
Owner: “I really do not care, and I do not want people like you in my restaurant anyway.”
It was the coolest thing I ever saw. The owner stood there and waited for those people to leave. It was really bad.
After they left, the owner came to me and said: “Fuck those people. You are doing a great job, and I would not have hired you if you did not show potential. If anyone else talks to you like that, tell them to get lost and leave. I do not want their money.”
Coolest. Boss. Ever.

I work as a cocktail waitress. I am seven months pregnant.
A woman, the Karen, enters with what I assume is her husband, son, and daughter. She asks to sit for four for lunch. This is not really a restaurant; we only have a small sandwich and wings menu.
I give them menus. The Karen says, “But wait, do you work here?” “Yes.” “But you are pregnant, you cannot work here if you are pregnant.” “I work here; I do not drink here.” I laugh, trying to keep the mood light.
The woman looked at me and asked, “Have you taken any prenatal courses? Do you really think that’s responsible to have your unborn baby in here?” I made a mistake there. I get defensive when people claim I’m a bad mother. So I replied, “Well, you’ve brought your kids in here.” “Yes, and what kind of example do you think you’re setting for them?” They grunted and waved me away while I gathered my thoughts.
I can kiss my tip goodbye, but I hope that ends the talk.
They flag down the bartender after a few minutes; they seem ready to go. Karen asks for a manager. They haven't even gotten drinks, so I ask if I can help. Her husband, Mr. Karen, says sternly, “No, just a manager, didn’t you hear my wife?”
The place is too small for a manager. Only servers, bartenders, and two owners work there. The person working is in the back on a call and will get angry if I go bother her.
I realize they might still be uncomfortable with my pregnancy. I suggest, “Maybe ‘Ella’ (the other server) can help?” Karen gets up to search for the manager. I give up and drag her back from her call.
The owner approaches with a big smile and asks if she can help. “Your server is pregnant.” The owner says she knows and asks if they want a different server.
Karen: No, no, no, she can’t be a drink girl if she’s pregnant. That is child abuse.
Owner: I assure you, none of our employees drink on the clock. Especially not our pregnant ones. If you prefer, I can have Ella serve you...
Mr. Karen says he does not want his kids seeing this.
Owner: Maybe I am missing something. Seeing what, exactly?
Mr. Karen (speaking slowly and condescendingly): A. pregnant. woman. around. all. this. alcohol.
Me: I do not know what you are implying, but I would never drink during pregnancy.
Karen: Look, honey, didn’t you take a health class in junior high? Alcohol vapor gets absorbed into your blood through the air, and that blood poisons the fetus.
The owner and I exchange a look. We know we won't succeed with her.
Owner: So we can have Ella serve you, or I’m afraid there is nothing else we can do.
Mr. Karen states they will not leave until she is fired.
Owner: We cannot help you.
Mr. Karen: I’ll call the police! You are an accomplice to child abuse!
Owner: There is no child abuse to discuss, sir. Please leave.
Karen (with teary eyes): YOU MAY NOT THINK A FETUS IS A CHILD, but I was taught life starts at conception. I will stand up for all living things, big and small, because that is what my lord and savior wants me to do!
While she delivered that tearful speech, she looked around, expecting others to join in? Applaud?
Owner: You are bothering my customers. Leave now, or I will escalate this, which I really do not want to do.
Karen: JESUS IS LOVE, and Jesus said this is not okay. Just because you think it’s fine to abuse a child if it is small enough—
This is an Irish pub. The owners are devout Catholics. She was not having this.
Owner: HEY. I do not need anyone to tell me what Jesus said. If there was abuse here, I would have stopped it, but there is none. Please leave.
Mr. Karen: I am calling the police.
Owner: Do that.
We stopped serving their table. While we waited for the cops, Karen kept giving her sermon. People watched, and eventually, everyone yelled at her until she quieted down.
Enter Awesome Officers. AO1 and AO2.
AO1: This is the (Town name) Police department. Is there a Mr. Karen here?
Mr. Karen: Right here, officers!
AO1: You said you saw child abuse—are the parties still in the bar?
They point me out. I pretend not to notice because I fear they will take them outside, and I will not be able to watch the fireworks anymore.
AO2: So, what exactly happened?
Karen: That woman was drinking! She is pregnant; you can clearly see she is very pregnant.
Before I can tell them she is lying about my drinking, the officers look at each other and look back at the Karen family.
AO2: That is not illegal.
Karen: WHAT?
Mr. Karen: Look here now—
AO1: It is not recommended, but it is not illegal. Do you know the woman? Is she a friend or family?
Karen: She works here. In a bar. And she is pregnant!
Mr. Karen: I want this place’s liquor license revoked.
AO2: Listen, she is not doing anything illegal. I can talk to her, but we cannot take action beyond that. Did you see anything else you want to report?
AO2 approached me, took me to a quiet spot while AO1 got personal information and finished the statement. Karen cried again, apparently lamenting being the last place with good Christian morals in the bar.
AO2 introduced himself and congratulated me on the pregnancy. He said I likely overheard why they were called and began offering public resources for new mothers, parenting classes, etc. I waited for the right moment to speak up with my innocence.
Patrons approached, thinking I was in trouble, and started defending me. We have many regulars who know me; they would not let this nonsense stand. They even told the officers the owner asked the Karen party to leave, and they kept making a scene.
Awesome Officers spoke with the owner, who said she was about to call them but sirens outside hurt business, and she hoped the Karens would leave on their own.
The officers told the Karen party they must leave.
Mr. Karen claimed this public place was his right to be here.
AO1 told him, "No sir, this is a private business, and the business owners asked you to leave. This has happened more than once, but at least once since we've been here."
Karen yelled, "THIS IS A DISGRACE. THIS IS AN AFFRONT TO... TO... TO SCRIPTURE AND CHILD SAFETY AND—"
AO2 said, "I understand you’re upset. Let’s talk about it outside." He put a hand on Mr. Karen and gave him a firm look.
Mr. Karen walked out backward, shouting at them while bumping into things every step of the way.
Mr. Karen stated, "I’ll be contacting the authorities about your liquor license. I happen to be close personal friends with the mayor! And you two, I want badge numbers. Don’t think we’re done here because we haven’t even started."
Officers took the men out. A regular who left around the same time told him they walked the Karens to their car, which was illegally parked in a handicap space. They got tickets.

On my day off, I set up a lunch date with a guy from school.
Traffic was terrible, so he was late. I sat at my table, looking at the menu (this is not my work restaurant; the food is different, and it is nowhere near where I work).
A woman approached and took my menu from my hands.
She asked, "Why are you just sitting here? We’ve been waiting for service for 45 minutes."
They hadn't waited. They arrived at the same time as me, ten minutes earlier, and they already had drinks.
She said, "Ma’m, I don’t work here."
I did not recognize her then.
She insisted, "Don’t lie to me, you’re a waitress, you served me just last week, don’t you remember?"
I vaguely recall her coming into my restaurant because she complained her meal lacked hot sauce, sent it back because it was too spicy.
She stated, "I am a waitress at a local Mexican restaurant, but I am not a waitress at xxxxx."
She responded, "Same difference. You’re a waitress. Get a pen and paper and take down our orders."
She replied, "I am a waitress, but not here. I’m just trying to enjoy my lunch like you are. I am not employed here in any capacity."
She countered, "But you’re a trained waitress and this place is clearly running behind. Don’t you people take an oath or something?"
A bit of r/maliciouscompliance kicked in. I rarely stand up to this kind of stupidity in my role as a server; 99.9% of the time, it happens while I am actually working.
I went to their table with a pen and paper from my backpack. I wrote down all their orders. I told them it would take 45 minutes and to sit tight. I even brought ketchup they requested (I grabbed it from another table) then I left.
I texted my date to meet me a few blocks over.
The next day, the lady called my boss at my actual restaurant. She also unleashed on the manager at the restaurant I was dining at. I felt bad realizing I had left the people who actually work there in a tough spot. So, I returned the next day to apologize and follow up. They were chill; we shared a great laugh about it.
They said, “We were so confused because she described the server with explicit details, but no one like that works here. We thought she had lost her mind.”
My boss knew who I was from her description. He told them he takes this seriously and asked what day this happened. When they told him, he said, “You must be mistaken. That server had the day off, and she wasn't here.”
After some angry yelling and screaming at my friendly manager about needing to “represent the restaurant wherever I go,” she gave up.

I work as a bartender at a small restaurant. Last night, I worked quickly because it was Saturday. I make Long Islands when someone on the other end of the restaurant demands to speak to a manager, saying, “...Maybe they can get us some ACTUAL service!”
I managed the restaurant this week. I set down 4/6 Long Islands, leaving two regulars unhappy. I walked over and introduced myself to an older couple in their 60s. They looked angrily at me and a young waitress.
“This stupid girl just brought me a flat beer!” I look. The beer is not flat. It has less head than ideal, but it is not flat. Still, I do not argue with him. “Sir, that is not her fault.” I try. His wife cuts me off. “Yes, it is. Anyone can see this beer is flat. If it is flat, she should not have brought it!” Again. Beer? Not flat.
I try a different tactic. “I am the bartender here, ma'am. If you blame anyone, blame me.” Her husband gives me a smarmy, condescending look without speaking. “Well, now we are getting somewhere. Why did you pour me a flat beer?” I finally explain. “I am sorry, sir, our tap was damaged earlier this week. I can get you a different beer, but Mac...” He looks offended, and his wife cuts him off to yell at me. “What, you haven't fixed it? What kind of restaurant is this?”
I try to explain the manager is in her seventies and home sick, but the server makes the mistake of trying to take back the beer the old man did not want. The Karen slaps her hand, and her husband glares at the young woman. “I did not say you could take that back! Go play on your phone.”
I glared at them. They had no food. They only wanted a beer. I saw how easy it would be to do the right thing. "Ma'am, you can't be striking servers. I have to ask you to leave." She stared, slack-jawed, shocked she was being kicked out for a light slap. Still, I gave her a hand.
"It was just a tap!" She insisted. Her husband hated me with his eyes. "No. I'm not moving. Get me your manager."
I tried to say the manager was sick. So, I acted like the manager. He cut me off.
"Get her on the phone then. I won't leave until..."
I cut him off. "...The police show up? If I call anyone, it will be them. Don't worry. It's a misdemeanor."
He left fast. I went back and found a line of customers who understood.

Last night was probably the busiest night last week. I work as a waitress at an upscale steakhouse.
The hostesses put us on a one-hour wait for walk-ins because of many booked reservations. That is the general rule from the GM. This couple made me furious during our peak hour.
The front lobby holds guests waiting for a table. Reservations get seated quickly. Hostesses use an iPad to show managers which guest sits where and how long they stay.
I was clearing a table in my section. I overheard a hostess try to talk to a couple at my section's booth. This couple walked in, saw the crowd waiting, and chose a table with no reservation. They also sat at a dirty table. I thought, "Are these people real?"
This is what I got between the hostess and the older man sitting with his wife:
“Excuse me sir? Didn't you come to the host stand so we could check your reservation?”
“We don’t have reservations. Someone needs to clean this up,” she said, pointing at the messy table.
“I'm sorry sir, but if you don't have a reservation, the wait will be an hour. Someone already asked for this booth by the fireplace and they need to sit.”
“We don’t care about reservations. We are hungry and we are going to eat. Get someone to clean our table! I am not asking a third time!”
After that failure, the hostess looked shaken. She never dealt with guests that rude and direct before, so it made sense. With my Latina blood boiling, I went over.
“This is my section, and after hearing that talk, you both have no right to be served. There is a family waiting for this table, and I will ask you to leave. Unless you want me to get a manager to escort you out.”
The couple yelled at me for drinks. I went to my GM who saw what already happened with the hostess. They got escorted out and told they could not return.

Bartender here.
This girl walks into my bar. I walk over. I place a drink in front of her and ask her
“Hey! How are you? What can I get you today?”
“Cosmo,” she says.
“Alright coming right up. That’s a really cool dress by the way.”
(It looked like an expensive, skin-tight Kim Kardashian dress. Metal panels lit up when she moved—I just said it quickly. I didn't hit on her.)
She gave me an “ew” look and said, “One. I have a boyfriend. 2. I don’t date f****ts. 3. Hurry up with my drink before I decide you don’t get to work here”
I stopped suddenly. I felt slightly shocked. Thoughts rushed through my head. Was she joking? Would anyone think that was funny?
No. She was serious.
My Turn:
“In what universe do you think you can walk into a bar—insult the bartender—and actually expect him to make you drinks?"
Silence.
“Nah, you’re dismissed.”
She returns the next day with her boyfriend and points at me, signaling, “that’s him.”
“Yo I heard you were talking sh*t about my girl. Do you know what happens when guys talk sh*t to my girl?”
Ugh. Here comes one of those guys trying to act tough for his girl. These guys are the dumbest.
“Do you know what actually happened?”
“I don’t care what happened! You disrespected my girl”
He jumped over the bar. I jumped over the bar to his side. Then he jumped back to the guests’ side, and a bouncer tackled him.

I have worked as a waitress for my family’s small Mexican restaurant for about six years. Out of twelve, it has been open, and I have had my share of waitressing horror stories, but this one stuck with me.
My uncle, the owner, works seven days a week running and managing his restaurant from five in the morning until nine at night. On Sundays, we close an hour earlier than on weekdays because he likes to go home and relax or spend time with his family.
One Sunday, we were busy all day. We ran out of items like steak, rice, and fries, things we usually replace with alternatives. Still, we finished the day without a problem.
Until... a family of ten showed up at the door. I was tired from the hard day, and seeing them made me want to disappear.
But they made a “valid” argument that we were still open. My uncle peeked out of the kitchen and told me to let them in. He said he would turn the stoves on again and see what he could make for them.
I warned them before they sat down that we ran out of items. The husband and some older kids agreed they should go elsewhere, but the wife argued they were already here, so they sat down.
She looked like she was already in a bad mood, or she had a bad attitude from the start.
They looked at their menus. I brought them drinks. Everything went fine until they ordered. They forgot I warned them. They asked for the items we lacked anyway. I had to deny each item they listed while the wife rolled her eyes at me.
I offered alternatives. They complained, saying they wanted steak instead of chicken. She asked for a discount because we were out of things. Usually, I would say yes since I control that. This lady was rude. I was tired and not in the mood to be fake friendly. So, I told her we do not offer discounts for items that have replacements.
She disliked that.
They got their food. I noted it is almost an hour after closing and they still have not left. After eating, they sat and talked for another 15 minutes.
I am tired. I am annoyed. I have school the next day.
They came to the register after they finished chatting. My cousin at the register charged them for their food. Then they started bothering her about a discount and how we should have gone to the deli or a store. They said, “the customer is always right.”
My uncle was nice enough to let them in after we had turned everything off to start cleaning.
They left no tip. They announced they would never return and told their friends not to come here again.
Guess who came back only a few months later.

I waited tables during college. This is one of the best memories I have of my manager handling a rude guest.
One table held a gay couple at a booth. They held hands the whole time they were at the restaurant. A woman with two small children flagged me down from across the dining room. Her table was not in my section, so I assumed she wanted me to find her server. I went over and asked what I could do for her. She said:
“What the HELL is wrong with you? How can you allow THEM in here? I’ve been coming here for 20 years and I’m appalled. Do me a favor and move those q***rs to a different table so my kids don’t have to see that sort of disgusting behavior.”
They were just holding hands. Get over yourself, lady. I wanted to tell her off, but I just said, “One moment ma’am and I’ll get a manager for you.”
I told my manager what happened. He went to her table and said if she had issues with other guests eating, she should not eat out. She took her kids and left without ordering.

I am a full-time student pursuing my PhD at age 30 while working full-time as a server. I have worked at this Greek bistro for nearly 15 years. I started bussing around age 16 and I am now a manager.
A few months ago, around six o'clock, a regular named Andy came in. Andy works at a mattress store and always eats lunch here. He is a great guy, nearly 400 pounds. Andy arrived after work with a woman about ten years older than him; they were clearly on a date. We fussed over him; the owner's wife gave him our best table and we brought a free glass of champagne.
Andy ordered the meat platter; she ordered a vegetarian platter. While they ate, I heard her gasp. Andy’s face turned blue, and his hands went to his throat. I went over and gave him the Heimlich while the owner called 911. I gave him back blows when his date hit me with her purse. She screamed at me, "You're hurting him! I gave him first aid, that’s not right!" Andy was still choking. The owner pulled her away; she kept screaming. Andy’s steak flew, and he could breathe. Paramedics arrived, and she told them I hurt him. The paramedics told her I saved his life.
They ended up taking Andy in because he was wheezing slightly. She gave me a dirty look and followed them out.
Two days later, Andy came in for lunch with his coworker. He thanked me repeatedly. Then, he told me that was the first and last date with that woman. He brought his new girlfriend yesterday; she liked the restaurant and was nice.

I waited tables and tended bar for years before changing to my current job.
A table arrived, ate, drank, and paid cash. I told them to have a good day and leave. I took a drink order at a new table and saw the lady standing there angry. I made eye contact with her husband, and he looked very embarrassed.
Finish taking the drink order. Go to them. "Yes? Is there a problem?"
She told me I gave her the wrong change and was very mean about it. I cannot recall exactly what it was, but I meant to round up to avoid pennies—you heard me, pennies. Their change was supposed to be $3.78, and I meant to give them $3.80. I guess I made a mistake this time and gave them $3.75. Either way, she was rude.
She showed me the receipt. I apologized and admitted my error. Then, I pointed out I forgot to ring up her coffee and promised to return with an updated check.

Last night I worked a 14 top. They were all terrible people, the douchiest I have ever met. The royal family of Douchland.
One guy sat down and ordered a beer. He said, “Every time you come to the table I want you tohave a beer for me.” I thought he was joking, so I left and returned. He asked, “Where is my beer? Did you really forget what I told you two minutes ago? Wow.”He asked, “Where is my beer? Did you really forget what I told you like 2 minutes ago? Wow,” and I thought he was joking, so I left and came back.
For the next two hours, I did whatever. Every single time I approached the table, I left a beer.
For the next two hours, I approached the table and left a beer every single time.
After about 45 minutes, the beer piled up. A friend of King Doucherbottom tried to take one I put down. I grabbed it and said, “Sorry sir, this is your friend's beer. I would be happy to get one for you if you like.”
He ended up buying 25 beers at eight dollars each, plus a 20% mandatory auto-grat on the table. He drank maybe four.

KhogewerfKhogewerfToday I had the worst or best thing happen bringing a group of 32 people to their table.
Bringing a group of 32 people to their table gave me probably the worst or best thing that happened.
I work at an all-you-can-eat restaurant. People pick food and take it to their tables, so you must walk back and forth to get new food. We do not have tables with more than five people. This means standing up does not mean passing many people by. Otherwise, it feels like sitting in a full cinema row and needing to use the restroom, passing about ten people.
For this group of 32, we used three tables of 11, with five on each side and one at the head. However, the reservation woman insisted everyone sit at one table, not two small gaps between the three tables, because she said it was easier to get up. I tried explaining this seating would be less comfortable, but she kept yelling that it had to happen. So, I agreed and moved the tables toward each other.
After moving the tables, I watched sixteen people struggle to get onto the couch next to the table. These five minutes followed probably the best of my life.
They ate for two and a half hours. Every time someone stood, I watched seven others move off the couch to the table side so one person could get food. This turned a five-second job into a five-minute job every time.

Me said, “Yeah no problem.”
Assholes said, “Okay, we should be there around 8:30 p.m.”

The ringleader explained the party trickled in and ordered drinks from the bar. “We only want to see options that are 100% plant based.” I, the fool, asked for clarification. Do you want only vegan items, or vegetarian items?
His eyes narrowed. “Vegetarian items still have animal products, so they aren’t cruelty free.”
Cool. I can already tell we will connect.
I care that people get what they want, but I do not let them ruin their diet choices by going out to eat. I tell the kitchen to prep new utensils and make a note to check every dish needing vegan changes myself.
I cleared the menus from the table. I copied the vegan apps, salads, four entrees, and a dessert onto a receipt slip, then went to talk to them. The table talked too much for me to get their attention when I announced the choices, so I went around (two or three at a time) sharing options. They did not decide right away. I moved to the next group. Taking this table's order took me 25 minutes. My other eight-top and three three-tops were not happy. The hostess sat a table just as I started the order, so they left (understandably) after 20 minutes because no one came and greeted them. A few minutes later, the lead vegan asked me for a drink menu. Nobody else ordered liquor, so I gladly provided it.
I explained, “We do not have a separate drink menu. The food and drinks are all on one tri-fold. I have a full bar, lots of wine and taps. What are you looking for?”
He wants to see our cocktails. After fifteen seconds of thinking, he put both hands on his head. His partner touched his shoulder and told him to look at a menu. I flipped it to the drinks side before handing it to him.
Vegan options cost 30-50% less than regular entrees. This makes it a small check for the party size. I did better with the eight-top celebrating a birthday.
Seventeen separate checks.

I worked at a small, nicer boutique restaurant five years ago. Most of the time, it was a dream server job. That day, I was the only server, two cooks, and a dishwasher. A blonde woman and her brunette friend came in for an early lunch. I got mild Karen vibes.
I served them their soup and then went back to the bar to do more prep for the day.
The blonde lady called me over in disbelief.
“Excuse me! There is a HAIR in my soup,” the woman said angrily and rudely.
The hair was long blonde hair. Every worker there that day had black hair.
I apologized, took the soup, and promised to return it. I went to the kitchen, pulled out the hair, and held it up. “The blonde customer complained about hair in her soup. Which one of you dropped this hair in there!”
We all laughed and then I gave her a new soup. She tipped well.

“Oh, that’s fine.”

A few weeks ago, at my busy restaurant, a woman arrived. She said people from a jujitsu club wanted dinner and drinks. We ask about reservations. My manager asked for the number. She said about 75, maybe up to 100. My manager laughed, then horror struck as she saw the woman was serious.
Our restaurant is large; the kitchen is very small. We enforce a strict 20 top cut-off. Despite this, the woman insisted they were already inside and refused any refusal.
We let them in because it was about 8 p.m. and things calmed down. The group sat outside on our large patio. Two servers split the group.
People ordered at different times; many just drank. The kitchen handled things okay. About 30 people never went to their spots. They crowded the bar instead. They stood there. Our servers use this area to get drinks. After trying to push through, we gave up. We accepted this reality. For bar drinks, we went around the bar side every time. The bar is long; entry is only on each side. This puts us out of the way.
This group arrived around 8 p.m. and stayed nearly all night.
