I have seen shadow people since I was about seven. I saw them in the bedroom when I visited my grandmother, and I felt terrified. I hid my face under the covers until morning. I always thought the house was haunted because they only appeared there. My mom started an abusive relationship around age eight or nine. Then, I began seeing them outside the house watching me while I waited for the school bus. This lasted a while. I blamed Adderall and Seroquel for not sleeping much.

They stopped coming around until a few months ago. Now, they only appear at my boyfriend's house. They stand at the end of his hallway, blocking the way to the garage. Someone died in the garage before they bought the house. Once, my mom and I saw someone press their face against the garage window. I see two types: one is slightly taller than me and completely black (I am 5’2”). The other is just black mist. The bathroom door and the garage door lead side by side. One time, I walked out of the bathroom, and the fully black one was there as usual. It was so close I had to squeeze past it. I felt friction on my skin when I did.

I have not seen the misty one for about two weeks; it has been replaced by that one, but only once. I walked out of the bathroom, and it was in the same spot. I did not think anything of it. I turned to walk back to the room, and as I moved my arm back, I felt it grab my arm. I panicked and ran into the room. Also, once I was alone playing "Sims" there.Sims, I heard what sounded like my boyfriend yelling my full first name. I went out to check if he was there and heard his mom yell my name. No one was home, and I felt spooked.

I first saw shadow people around age four or five. I recall leaving my room one night. A large group of them was in the living room. It scared me terribly; I actually vomited.

My mom heard me scream and ran out of her bedroom. I could only see her silhouette, so I thought she was one of them. It was bad.

After that, I became very afraid of gorillas. They reminded me of them.

Two years ago, I walked outside my apartment with my dog. We went into an open field. I saw a shadow couple with a dog. I truly thought it was a real couple. As we got closer, I saw they were not moving but were facing us.

I walked closer, trying to act normal. Thirty yards away, my dog started growling and barking—a sound I never heard before. I panicked. I turned and went home. I looked back again from a safe distance. I still saw them there. No movement.

This is the weirdest thing I have ever met. I still think about this moment often.

    From Redditor u/Ian_Sear:

When I was young, maybe eight or nine, I saw a shadow person.

I was sleeping. I woke up and saw a tall, dark figure in my closet. It calmed me. I stared at the creature for what felt like forever, then it moved aside and vanished. Then, pure terror hit me. I called for my dad; he looked but saw nothing.

Two weeks later, my mom heard a sound and woke up in the middle of the night. She looked through her door crack (still in bed) and saw a tall, black figure there, then it disappeared from her view.

At thirteen, I slept in my basement, alone. I woke up somewhere else, on the couch facing where I slept. They were separated. I woke up and saw the tall black creature in the closet. I felt calm again. Then it moved aside. I grabbed a knife. I opened the closet and stabbed inside to check. Nobody was there. Was this sleep paralysis? I could not move from the bed during both sightings. I only got up when the creature moved.

    From Redditor u/SelectiveCommenting:

This happened about 10 to 15 years ago. I was about fourteen. I was sober and had never heard of shadow people.

Dense woods top my street lead to an open field where we ride dirtbikes. My older brother and his friend walk my dog. They plan to go home, but I wanted another lap around the field. After my first lap, they were out of sight. So I went for another lap... I spotted a dark silhouette at the treeline and instantly got chills; my hair stood up.

It felt like minutes, but I probably only stared for a few seconds. This thing is blacker than black, like vantablack. The shadows from trees and bushes do not compare. I am scared because I know I see something paranormal. I considered ditching the bike and riding through the woods home since it stood right at the path's edge. I was in fight or flight mode; I figured I could not fight a "ghost," so I rode as fast as I could. I did not look back. The scariest part was knowing I had to go literally feet away to get out. This thing was seven to nine feet tall, but I figured it could not grab me if I went fast.

I never saw it again, but I never go into the woods alone. Sleep paralysis never happened. It did not feel evil, nor good. It just observed. I was scared because I had no prior paranormal experience, but now I want to see it to try and understand it.

    From Redditor u/jmass06:

I remember seeing multiple shadow people in my home at night growing up. I recall being small enough to sleep between my parents when scared. I saw them all over the bedroom and walking the hallway. I only describe them as dark human figures with eyes and a mouth hole. This was not peripheral vision; they often faced me. I remember about a dozen standing near the bed, leaning over my parents and me, watching. I felt scared, not ill or hurt. This happened every night I slept in the dark. I have not heard of anyone else having so many in one spot. I always wondered if our house was a portal because it was always busy with shadow people all night.

I slept with the light on in my room because of them. I started sleeping with the lights out around age 12 or 13. I guess I grew out of it. I am 33 now and have not seen them since, but I think of them often. I wonder if my three-year-old has the same problem because she is very afraid of the dark.

    From Redditor u/Dazzling-Economist35:

When I was six or seven, I stayed at my grandparents' house while my parents were gone. My brother and I shared a room. We got tucked in and fell asleep. I woke near 4 am and heard footsteps on the stairs (I did not recognize them as my grandparents). Then I heard the baby gate open, and the footsteps stopped. Two minutes later, they started again. I knew they were heading toward my room, so I jumped into my brother's bed because I was terrified. Then this 'shadow man' walked into my room, and I remember him just staring at me.

He walked closer to our bed but stopped and watched me. I pretended to be asleep, and he stayed there. I fell asleep. When I woke, I told my grandparents, but they did not believe me. That day, I went to school and told a friend, and he had no clue. Every time I slept there, it happened unless I blocked the door. Even then, I could see him in the cracks. I saw him once in my parents' house when I was 10. I tried throwing something at him, but he walked away and ignored it. I have not seen him since.

When I was around 10 or 11, I stayed up late one night reading aHarry PotterI lay in bed, lamp on, window behind me (second floor). Suddenly, a chilling cold hit my feet, deep inside.

I looked at the back wall and saw a shadow. It was tall and faced me. It stayed a moment, then turned and vanished into the wall near my feet. I felt real fear then. I was wide awake.

    From Redditor u/Due_Significance_706:

I lived in an apartment where I saw a shadow person twice. Once, directly. I looked at it from two feet away in bright daylight. I am 33, and I still fear dark hallways, but I sat on the patio, looked over my shoulder, and saw it right by the sliding door. It was right next to me. I just blinked. This did not calm me down.

The blackness was eerie. I have never seen true black before or since. It acted like a black hole.

My husband saw it twice, too, from the side.

While we lived there, my son would wake up screaming, saying a very large, dark brown dog scared him. This happened many times.

After we moved, we never saw the shadow person. My son stopped waking up screaming.

    From Redditor u/alliraburgess:

My first experience occurred in 2008 in Sorell, Tasmania. My stepsister and I walked our two dogs in the back paddock behind the houses on Nash Street. We walked the dirt road with a graveyard nearby and a small forest of tall trees during the day.

A black figure hovered. The dogs began barking. It looked tall, wearing a black cloth. The figure moved toward us. We ran, nearly falling. This experience is unforgettable. We thought we were crazy. Now, at twenty, I know what the figure was. I believe they exist.

    From Redditor u/Ginger_Shark21:

I have had three encounters with shadow people in my life. As a child, I called them ghosts because I did not know another name.

At four, I could not sleep one night. I crawled into my parents' room. I was not asleep. I saw something. A shadow person and a dog entered through the wall. The dog placed its paws on my mom's side of the bed. The person walked around the room. The person gestured to the dog. They left through the closed door. I told my parents the next morning; they did not believe me.

In my mid-20s, I saw a shadow cat. My boyfriend saw the cat too. It was not our black cat; she slept in the other room. We checked after, but we both saw the shadow cat cross the room and vanish.

In my late-20s, I was alone in a different apartment. As I slept, a feeling woke me. I looked at the doorway. A shadow person stood there. This was the time I feared a shadow entity most. I first thought someone broke in. I tried to act asleep, hoping they would leave. I felt a bad feeling for a long time. The feeling passed. I looked around the apartment and checked my door. The door stayed locked. No one was there.

I saw someone standing in the entryway to my bedroom.

    From Redditor u/MOTOMOMMA:

My sister and I both saw a shadow figure circling the kitchen table. It felt strange. Looking back, we started seeing this shadow a couple of years after my dad died. I was seven; she was eleven. We saw this shadow for about three years, then it stopped.

At nineteen, I had two sleep paralysis episodes. This age marks when I began developing undiagnosed anxiety. This happens around the time my aunt died; she was my mom's sister, childless, and cared for my siblings and me a lot. I got sleep paralysis a couple of times right after she passed. Even my ex once claimed to see a shadow figure while sleeping in his closet. I woke up to him praying to God in Portuguese. I started freaking out because I never heard him pray before. He said he was freaked out, but then he never saw anything again.

Last August, my mom died. Around November or December, I started seeing strange things at the edge of my vision again. For the last two months, this has been constant; I get scared to be home alone without my boyfriend. Luckily, our work schedules match, so we are usually home together. I also have three dogs. Two of them sometimes stare at walls or sit randomly in the kitchen late at night. So, I started closing my bedroom door at night. I also closed my closet doors. I have a mirror facing my bed, and I heard that acts like a doorway for spirits.

A hallway in my house leads to a back door we never use. One of my dogs sleeps down there, and I get weird feelings looking down that hallway. I never see a full figure in front of my face; it stays in my side vision. Every time someone close dies, I get these feelings. I think my loved ones visit me, which I accept. But it still scares me. I want to sage my home, but I lack the time. I ask my boyfriend to fall asleep after me because if he sleeps first, my mind spins, and I start seeing things.

    From Redditor u/Pleasedontyall:

I had two. Once, at age seven, I was the only one awake, watching TV in the living room. I looked at my open bedroom door, which connected to the living room, and saw a shadow standing there. It made a big, sweeping motion toward the room. I crawled under my blanket, and when I came out, it was gone.

The other time, I lay in bed trying to sleep and checked my phone for Twitter. I put it down, and when I looked up at the window, a shadow was inside. I knew it was a woman. I blinked, and it vanished, but it genuinely scared me. I sometimes see quick movements in my side vision. I once thought a cat darted around my house, but I found nothing as real as that.

    From Redditor u/hintomania:

I used to see many of them. One night, walking past the living room, I saw a shadow person peek their head around the corner and hide when I looked back. Houses I lived in often had more of them.

I saw a shadow dog or wolf while in bed and turned my head left. That made me jump. I have seen worse things than shadow people, so they are not very frightening now. I do not believe they are paranormal. My logic says no, but that does not explain why I see more in certain buildings.

    From Redditor u/Bintheknow:

I worked where the city morgue used to be, now offices. Looking at a picture in the bathroom, a shadow person startled me. It stood a bit taller than me and looked neat. I asked it to leave politely. Seconds later, it vanished.

Many people saw things at this company. I never felt threatened. I worked late into the night often.

My friend has had a shadow person at her house. I asked her about the person's eye color; she said white. Today, I saw it for the first time. It walked toward me. I took a second to process it; I thought it was my shadow. Then I knew my shadow cannot walk toward me, and I panicked. Later, I saw a scratch on me. I do not know if the shadow person or my dog caused it. My dog jumped on me recently, but this looks fresh. The scab is quite red.
