In the '80s, a couple riding a motorcycle got stopped by three men. Those men attacked and killed them both. Police caught them shortly after.
That same night, over 300 people gathered in front of the police department. They broke in and told the sheriff, "You guys did an excellent job, now leave it to us."
The mob broke into the cell where the three men were held. They beat them up, tied them to cars, and dragged them for four miles to a city park. There, they set them on fire while everyone clapped and cheered.
Almost no one talks about this now. Video of it exists.

About 40% of my hometown was homeless. No one had jobs. No one could afford housing.A neighbor paid for heat in houses where people were squatting. Everyone invited others over for dinner every night.
We did not know who was homeless; we just acted. We hired anyone for odd jobs. Many people lived like they did as kids: keep the fire burning with trees they cut, gather water by the well, trade, farm, and trap for food.
I went to school with many homeless kids. We had the best school breakfast program I ever heard of (looking back). Over half the school showed up until I moved to the city. You gave people the dignity they deserved. No one was shamed if they dropped out at grade 10; we all knew they should take the job if they needed it.

About 30 years ago, an 8-year-old girl disappeared during the downtown carnival. Days later, they found a suspect seen near the girl just before she went missing.
The guy admitted to her horrific murder. He was the girl's next-door neighbor and the dad's friend. He was convicted and sentenced to about 40 years.
Eight years later, he was paroled. He returned to the same house with his parents, next door to the girl's family and former friend (laws were a bit different then).
About a week later, the man did not show up at his parole office. His parents filed a missing persons report.
Rumor says several friends of the victim's father cared for him. If you talk to them, they just say they are sure he will not return.

No one thought to look there...
About a decade ago, crime spiked here. It was bad because one cartel tried to push out another. Since we are a sleepy town across the border from the US, we are prime cartel property.
When they stopped fighting in the streets, they abducted, interrogated, killed, and disposed of rivals' bodies. One cartel eventually took control of the town.
Authorities were baffled by their stealth. They appeared suddenly, struck their targets, and disappeared into the shadows. This level of action is unheard of for a cartel, even for a small unit or single agent.
Federal investigations found no cartel headquarters. The operation had to be large. They possessed weapons, vehicles, metalshops, dorms, kitchens, and equipment for disposing of corpses. Investigators searched nearby ranches, warehouses, and junkyards; they found nothing.
No one thought to look. A fully operational state prison, used as their headquarters, sits a few kilometers outside the town.Everyone was involved: inmates, guards, the warden, and the Governor. People died there; bodies were dissolved in acid, and drums were dumped in a nearby river.
The prison operation ended. The former governor is now wanted by the Interpol.

I have a story. Short version: Popular high school students ran a secret towel fight club. The club accidentally killed a friend in a local politician's house, who then buried the story.
The towel fight club involved taping towels over hands and beating each other. It claimed to be boxing, but the action showed they lost control.

A health teacher got caught sleeping with a student during high school. Everyone passed that year, including me who skipped most days.
Five years ago, two scandals hit another small town. First, preschool teachers dosed children with melatonin during nap time.
Second, a respected funeral home faced investigation for selling body parts.

Our local pizza place was a known Klan hub.
Everyone knew this. Still, if you Google "[town] k-k-k," this pizza shop shows up first.
They sold some nasty pizza.

Fifteen years ago, the local District Attorney called his girlfriend. He told her he was taking the day off and loved her. He parked his car in town and walked past the shops. He has not been seen since.
The next day, his car was found where he parked it. He left his cell phone inside, but his keys and wallet were missing. Later that year, his laptop, without its hard drive, was found under a bridge by a river. A local woman found the hard drive by the riverbank, but it was too damaged to recover data.
Investigators found someone searched his home computer for "How to wreck a hard drive."
Did he jump from a local bridge? Did he meet someone he prosecuted who harmed him? Or did he leave his life to start a new one?

A McDonald's manager in his 50s had an affair with a high school senior in 2011.
They married a year later and stayed together. The odd part? He has a kid in the same class as his new wife. So the kid faced a rough divorce and now has a stepmom his age.

My hometown wasn't small, but here is a dark secret: many sports players had mansions there. Their wives and kids moved around the town a lot.
Every sports player wife in that town had heavy opiate addiction. Every single one. Opioid addiction hits the country, but among the rich wives, the infection rate was 100%.
I know because a friend's mom cut hair for almost every one of those wives. I was homeless in my senior year. One of the sports player wives told me about me and gave me an iPhone. That phone cost her pennies, but I wish I thanked her more because that wife died from an overdose soon after.

There is a half-submerged submarine from the war in the bay where I live. You can walk out to it when the tide goes out.In the late '80s, someone cut open the hatch—one of the only parts sticking out of the sand—climbed in to look around. The tide came in, and he drowned.
If I recall right, they filled the whole hatch with cement and welded it shut to stop it from happening again.

We have a vineyard next to our village. On that hill sits a large wooden cross. Many people go there to drink, walk, or with their dogs, but almost no one knows why the cross is there.
During WWII, a vineyard keeper lived with his son. His son was recruited, and the man was left alone. After the war, his son survived and wanted to prank his dad by sneaking up on him at night. The vineyard keeper saw him and thought he was a robber, so he grabbed his rifle. He shot the robber. When he learned it was his son, it broke his heart.
He dug a grave on top of the hill for his son and put up a big wooden cross next to it. Finished, he lay next to his son and shot himself. Since then, no one works the vineyards, and a big wooden cross sits on the hill. Now, you cannot even recognize it as a grave.
