Joe Hill spent nearly 10 years building his career without his father, Stephen King, opening doors for him. After releasing his well-received short story collection 20th Century Ghosts in 2005, online rumors surfaced about his true parentage. With the success of 2007's Heart-Shaped Box, Hill revealed his pen name was a pseudonym - his real name is Joseph Hillstrom King. Since then, Hill and King have collaborated on the novella In the Tall Grass and participated in family interviews. Hill's 2013 novel NOS4A2 is filled with references to King's novels and characters, while King's Doctor Sleep, released the same year, nods to his son's work. The pair view these Easter eggs as lighthearted fun, not serious links between their separate universes - but their future importance remains to be seen.
