An AskReddit question, "What do you regret finding out?", yielded answers that spanned disturbing family histories and upsetting medical procedures. At fourteen, my mom took me to a tattoo shop. She got her nipples pierced while the procedure happened. Then, she told me, "Your Dad bites harder than that." I could have lived without that information.

Around ten, I sat on the couch. My older sister moved toward me with a knife. She stabbed a hole in the cushion near my leg. She pulled the knife out and told me not to tell Dad. I was young and naive. My sister had a twisted sense of humor, so I did not know what to think. That action caused damage now.
Years later, my sister announced she planned to attack me with the knife but backed out at the last second. I thought I moved past the event, but this brought it all back.

The real reason half of my dad's family does not speak to us.
My twin and I were told they were not close and had mental health issues. After my dad died, we learned the truth: no one from his side attended the funeral; they chose to have their own.
My parents struggled to conceive. I knew this. My twin and I are IVF babies, born very premature. I weigh one pound, premature. Soon after, my mom got breast cancer.
While my dad cared for his sick mother (my paternal grandmother) and his sick wife and two premature newborns, he asked his brother to help care for their mother so he could focus on his family.
After my dad spent more time with us than his mom, she got worse and died. My father's brother blamed him for 'abandoning' the family and blamed my twin and me for our grandmother's death. If we were not born, my mother would not have gotten estrogen-positive breast cancer; they were all very Catholic, and IVF was a sin.
I never met my grandmother; I am named for her. However, an entire side of the family thinks it is my sister's fault she died.

My father never wanted me or children. He told my mother that if she had me, he would make both of us miserable. She believed he would change his mind once he saw me. She was very wrong.

I met my dad at fifteen. My mother kept him secret. In the first three sentences we spoke, he told me I was conceived on a beach in July during their last time. I was the result of a fling ending before I was conceived. He added, "We were good at two things, me and your mom. Fighting and screwing. Sadly, we fought more than we fucked, so it stopped being worth it."
Ten years later, this is how I get my family history.

My dad died at twelve. My mom remarried when I was fifteen to an Italian businessman. I liked him; he was interesting and loved my mom. He spoke five languages and traveled for work often. He told us stories about his youth in Italy, saying he played for the Italian national team and was in two World Cups. Long ago, getting information was hard, so we believed him. One Christmas, about ten years ago, I found videos online of the games he claimed to play. I bought them, only to see he had always lied. He never played. I kept it secret to protect his relationship with my mom and siblings, fearing they would question other parts of his life. He is a good man, and I love him, but this makes me wonder what else he lied about.

My mother died in a car accident when I was three. Years later, I found a newspaper article showing it was her fault. She did not pay attention, crossed the yellow line, and killed both her and the other car's occupant.

My pilonidal cyst—a hole forming where your tail was as a fetus—came so close to touching my spine. The first surgeon failed; he ripped the tissue and told me to take sit baths to help it close naturally. Eleven months later, I had the second surgery. It was only millimeters from tunneling into my spine, which could have caused infection or death. I wish I never knew how close it was. I am terrified it is still tunneling inside, even though it is closed externally now.

Humans create almost all audio in nature documentaries after the fact.
Studio props produce the crunch of snow under a bear's foot, the splash of a great white shark jumping from the water, and the sifting through sand of a mole.
I used to like Planet Earth, but now I cannot watch an episode without thinking about a guy in stained sweatpants playing with wooden blocks.

The procedure for taking out wisdom teeth is horrible. I had to get them all removed. Two weeks ago, I went to a dentist in Europe. They use local anesthesia, not laughing gas. I thought they would use a scalpel to cut the tooth out and then sew it back in.
Little did I know, they used almost a screwdriver to bend it out. Then, they used a plier to bend it even more. The dentist leaned into my mouth, using immense strength, and cracked out my tooth while I lay on the bench, sweating from fear.
I still have two more to take out on my left side.

After my dad died, before my mom died, she said he always felt my struggles came from him accidentally dropping me down the stairs as a baby. I struggled with math in school. Physically, I have a form of muscular dystrophy, but we did not know then. He believed my physical problems were his fault. This ate him up and fueled parts of his depression. I did not need to know this.
My parents tried their best. I hold no ill will toward them. My mother did not tell me to hurt me or my dad's memory. She just wanted to share. I have Becker's Muscular Dystrophy. A cousin has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. My MD is like the Diet Rite of MD. I get spasms and fall randomly. I got diagnosed after he died, so he never found out.
The only anger I carry is this: 1.) My dad died before sharing his meatloaf recipe. 2.) My mom died before telling me her biscuits and gravy recipe. They both died before telling me...jerks.

My ex told me not to worry about a guy when we were together. She ended up marrying him after five years.

The eye doctor's "blue light" test for eye pressure actually touches your eyeball. Now I know this, and it makes me squirm every time, even though I cannot feel it with the numbing drops.

That the HGTVshows like House Huntersor love it or list it were totally scripted and fake. Can't we have one real reality show?
