Description of 'Save Up Some Money' in the list '15 Things To Do Before 40'timmy12688:
Save money before 40. Start saving ten years ago. Now is the next best time. Put $5 aside monthly. Forget about it; it doesn't exist.
I put $25 away monthly since I was 16. EdwardJones set it up with my bank. Ten years later, I have $6,000 saved for retirement. I kept the $25, but that $6,000 grows more at 40 and more at 70.

Travel. Go where sleeping in a hostel or on rough ground in a tent does not hurt you yet. Eat and drink wild food before you see doctors checking blood pressure, cholesterol, and cancer screenings. Take smart risks. Do not fear getting hurt, as long as you can recover. Learn from that past mess so you do not repeat it when you should know better and healing takes more time.
Learn self-reliance. Know there is no such thing as "fair." When someone says "but that's not fair!" I picture a bully crying because he lost the fight he started. My pity for that mess is that he did not realize sooner life does not care about him. Wake up. An opportunity exists. You must find it. People will try to back you up, but no one can support you except you. Even those who love and protect you can leave in a second. Or they might turn out to be totally different than you thought.

Set a goal to get into top shape before 40. Getting older makes it harder and you get less healthy.

Travel. Go as much as possible. Experiencing different cultures offers great life value.

Do something that scares you intensely; for me, it was scuba diving. It was worth it!

You can do this after 40, but maybe having kids? Then you will not be too old to hang out with them as adults, and you might have more time with future grandkids. Having kids later is fine, but that is how I want it.

Go to music festivals. I used to enjoy that, but the thought of doing it now, at 41, is tiring. Also, I feel old and out of place.

Backpack Europe by yourself. Do it cheap. You meet many interesting people. They inspire you forever. You could do it after 40, but you'll likely want luxury later if you get the chance after 30 or 40. Do not plan. Use a rail pass and fly by instinct. Those ten weeks were the best of my twenties.

Live abroad alone for weeks, months, years. I am under 40, but I lived in several places globally. Each time, it felt like the best choice. Other people, cultures, and settings expanded my view, taught me about myself, and made me happier.

Run a marathon. The Chicago Marathon average age for males this weekend was 39.5 years. You have one year to prepare. Go.
