About this list

Nostalgia washes over us at the mere mention of school, evoking memories of carefree days spent with friends, playful classroom antics, and cafeteria meals. Certain subjects, like English and history, were particularly captivating, with their engaging narratives - whether fictional, like Tom Sawyer, or historical, like ancient Egypt. However, as we grow older, we come to realize that not all the lessons we learned in school were entirely accurate. We've gathered a collection of false school lessons shared by Weird History readers, and it's time for some teachers to clarify these misconceptions. Which of these supposed 'facts' were you also taught during your school days?

    Facebook commenter.Martha Knight C:

We would not have calculators everywhere we went! Lol

    Facebook commenter.Eric K:

That is a good point. I always thought it was nonsense even in fourth grade after a teacher told me.img src="https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/tf1/2/16/1f923.png" alt="🤣">.

    Facebook commenter.Kacie P:

True. My calculator travels with me. I do not do math.

    Facebook commenter.Heather L B:

Jokes. Now we walk around with a whole computer in our pockets.

    'Columbus Discovered America'

    Facebook commenter.Howard H:

Christopher Columbus explored and discovered America.

    Facebook commenter.Eddi Lynn W:

Christopher Columbus discovered America. It remains baffling and wrong that a parade honors him yearly in New York.

    Facebook commenter.Brandi H:

Evidence shows Vikings were here 400-500 years before Columbus. I have a textbook stating this; I homeschool.

Captain Cook discovered Australia, and everyone lived happily ever after. This is the biggest lie in Australian history.

'The Civil War Was Fought Over States' Rights'

    Facebook commenter.Katie G:

The Civil War’s main conflict centered on states' rights. It was fought over one right: the right to own slaves. Calling it ‘rights’ implies the conflict was about allowing Black and brown people to own property, which is a stretch. I grew up in the South and learned what was taught wrong to me.

    Facebook commenter.Barbara P:

I grew up in New England, but my kids lived in Virginia. I was shocked how the Civil War was taught in Southern schools.

    'Teachers Know Everything'

    A Facebook commenter wrote this.Craig S.

I used to think schoolteachers were smart adults. Now, I see they are mostly grown children with simple views. That is an overgeneralization. A few teachers I truly admired and respected exist—mostly gray-haired. As a group, I respect their patience and tolerance. Those who can teach, those who cannot teach. I respect teachers who have major, meaningful achievements and choose to share their knowledge. Shame on those who push childish wants.

    'Native Americans Relocated Willingly'

    A Facebook commenter wrote this.Madeline S:

Native Americans 'agreed to move' off their land onto reservations. I cannot believe we were told that simple version. I am glad I had history teachers who taught history as it truly was: tragic and vicious.
