About this list

Pee-wee's Big Adventure is a defining film for '80s kids. As the world's first introduction to Pee-wee Herman and Tim Burton's feature film debut, it showcases Burton's unique visual style and Pee-wee's absurd humor. You may recall it as a lighthearted romp, but rewatching reveals a darker side - for every comedic moment, there's a traumatic scene. If you watched this as a kid, it might explain your fear of clowns, instinct to react violently, or obsession with giant heads. Pee-wee's Big Adventure is a shared experience for the quirky and scared among us.

The Clown Outside Mario's Magic Shop Rivals Pennywise

Before entering Mario's Magic Shop, Pee-wee chains his bike to what is one of cinema's creepiest clowns. Move over Pennywise and Killer Klowns; this waving, mask-faced robot with an empty smile screams, "I'll eat your soul!"

The clown's evil nature shows once Pee-wee's bike is stolen. Its face changes from the vacant smile to a crooked, maniacal grin.

Pee-wee Rides With An Escaped Convict

Pee-wee gets picked up by an escaped convict named Mickey at one point. Mickey talks about his anger and brandishes a gun while driving Pee-wee down the highway. Then, Pee-wee must disguise himself as a woman so he and his new friend can escape a local sheriff who tells Pee-wee to leave the car because he "wants to get a look" at him.

Disturbing does not cover how the only authority figure in this scene acts. Mickey should make you stop hitchhiking forever.

    A Pet Store Burns Down

After escaping the Warner Bros. lot with his bike, Pee-wee finds a pet store engulfed in flames. Pee-wee runs inside as the hero, and the scene becomes even worse.

Pee-wee's rescue attempt is noble, but the pets inside must rely on a grown man in a red bow tie to get out. Luckily, Pee-wee saves most of what is there, including a scary moment where he runs out of the fire with snakes. Unfortunately, the fish do not survive because Pee-wee is just one man.

    Pee-wee Tries To Drown Francis

After finding his bike stolen, Pee-wee goes to Francis Buxton's house. Pee-wee tries to drown his rival while Francis takes a bath. Is Francis creepy? Yes. Did he hire goons for Pee-wee's bike? Certainly. Killing someone in the bathtub may not fix the issue.

Pee-wee fights Francis by messing up his swimming pool-sized bath and trying to push his head under the water. In a movie that seems for kids, the main character (who is an adult) decides death is the answer.

Pee-wee gets his bike back, and Francis ends up in space.

A strange moment happens when Pee-wee runs through a wet town for his bike. He enters an alley where muggers confront him. Pee-wee scares them off by hissing at them like a cat.

Hissing at someone is not inherently disturbing. But watching an adult hiss at other adults to scare them away is something to see.

Pee-wee Almost Gets Murdered By Bikers

Every popular kids' movie has a scene where the main character faces bikers. This film does not, perhaps because it would be too scary.Pee-wee's Big Adventurehowever, does not question, "Is this too far?"

Pee-wee provokes the Satan's Helpers by trying to use the phone in their bar. After they kick him out, Pee-wee knocks over their bikes. This is a big mistake. Pee-wee escapes the mess by dancing to "Tequila."

Pee-wee's Morning Routine Is That Of A Seven Year Old

Pee-wee's morning routine shows bizarre traits. He sets off a Rube Goldberg machine to fix his breakfast: pancakes, toast, eggs, bacon, and a strawberry. Then, he covers his face with scotch tape in his bathroom. After breakfast, he sits down and screams at his pancakes. He then pours Mr. T cereal over the plate, pretending to eat it like a dog.

    Pee-wee's House Is A Neat-Freak's Worst Fear

Production designers and Tim Burton fans might dream of Pee-wee's house. For anyone who cleans a space full of knick-knacks and tchotchkes, the house feels like a total nightmare.

Each room holds globes, monster heads, wooden dummies, and self-running train sets. This place collects a lot of dust and grime. That level of dirt causes anxiety. How much does Pee-wee pay someone to clean? Does a Rube Goldberg cleaning machine appear in a deleted scene?

    Twisted Sister Makes A Cameo

Pee-wee's Big AdventureTwisted Sister makes a cameo. The cameo shocks the audience out of their reverie. Pee-wee steals his bike back from Kevin Morton. He runs across the Warner Bros. backlot, through the Old West, a beach party, the North Pole, and a Godzilla movie. Then, he jumps straight into a Twisted Sister video.

Seeing Dee Snider on screen at the end of a story about a man-child and his bike is more traumatizing than anything else.
