I use a yoga/meditation trick. Check every part of your body to ensure it is totally relaxed. You might find your jaw, neck, shoulders, or back tense even when you feel relaxed.

Daydreaming works. I have stories to jump into. I know I will either sleep or have a good time imagining things. Either way, it wins. That's why falling asleep is easy.

A 22-minute audio track from my hypnotherapist. It is him going through a pre-recorded relaxation session. I use it often; I never hear the end.

Sometimes I don't get five minutes before I fall asleep. It is amazing.

Pick a topic, like car types or cities in Europe; then...

Name one thing for each letter of the alphabet related to the topic (for cars: Alpha Romeo, Bentley, Cadillac).

I have never reached Z before falling asleep.

This sounds dumb, but I count sheep. I keep my eyes closed and move them in an arc, like watching a sheep jump by, counting the sheep until I tire. I think the eye movement makes me tired.

Listen to people talk. A podcast or talk shows at a low volume. I focus on the start of the show and slowly drift off to sleep.

Do simple mental tasks to stop stressful thoughts. Conjugate French verbs you haven't thought about in ten years. Imagine walking in a familiar place. Do times tables. Think of words starting with each letter. This bores you to sleep. It stops your mind from racing.
