Sarajevo HaggadahThe Sarajevo Haggadah is uniquely indestructible. The Sarajevo Haggadah began in Barcelona, Spain, around 1350 CE. It is one of the oldest Haggadahs—Jewish texts explaining the Passover Seder—in the world. Although the Sarajevo Haggadah's content is not that mysterious, its ability to survive destruction makes it one of the most strangely tough books globally.
In 1492, Jews left Spain. The 150-year-old Haggadah had to leave the country to avoid destruction. It went to Italy and stayed there until the late 1800s. In 1894, the National Museum in Sarajevo bought it. During WWII, they moved it out of Sarajevo. It hid under floorboards in a Muslim home for ten years.
In the 1990s, the Haggadah reappeared. It survived another conflict and museum damage—the Bosnian War. People found it somehow whole on the museum floor amid debris, but the finder didn't see its value. Thankfully, they put it in a bank vault with other low-value items, where it withstood the Serbian siege. In 1995, it returned to the world, restored.
