About this list

The 1986 release of Watchmen, written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons, earned widespread acclaim and cemented its status as the greatest comic book series of all time. A sequel seemed unlikely until recently, due to the ambitious scope required and Moore's own opposition. Moore had vehemently argued against a sequel and eventually distanced himself from the mainstream comic book industry. However, after the commercial success of the Before Watchmen prequel series in 2012, DC Comics decided to revisit the world of Rorschach and Nite Owl. This led to the launch of Doomsday Clock in late 2017, a project entrusted to Geoff Johns and Gary Frank. Doomsday Clock builds on the entire history of Watchmen and decades of DC continuity, resulting in a rich storyline for long-time readers. However, not everyone is satisfied, and the original creators are not involved. Moore has denounced all Watchmen-related projects, including Doomsday Clock, Before Watchmen, and the 2009 film adaptation.
