About this list

Some wedding ceremonies are violently intense, with traditions that haven't changed in centuries. While calling them 'sacrificial rites' might be a stretch, some ultra-extravagant and weird religious sex traditions come close, complete with charismatic cult leaders. Many nuptial traditions bear a resemblance to sacrifices and Viking-style wedding rituals. This list includes some downright barbaric practices, like Kyrgyzstan's 'bride kidnappings'. Read on to see what happens when these macabre traditions meet modern nuptials.

Drinking Wedding Leftovers Out Of The Toilet

This is the nastiest wedding tradition ever, focusing on visceral imagery and gag-out effects. The only cost is possibly losing the ability to enjoy cooking.

This custom comes from France, a country known for sophistication, intelligence, and breaking taboos.Sources saythe ritual proceeds like this.

After the wedding reception, the happy couple goes to bed while the bridal party cleans up. They dump leftover punch, cake, hors d'oeuvres, napkins, and trash off their shoes into a chamber pot, making a garbage stew. While the newlyweds get tangled in bed getting dirty, half a dozen or more loud, likely drunk people barge in with a toilet full of slop and stay until the bride and groom drink it.

Blech! Today, this trash usually mixes chocolate and champagne (or something similar) and serves it in elegant containers. This is a dish.vaguely decorated like a chamber pot. Still, what is known cannot be unknown; once something enters a toilet, symbolically or otherwise, there is no turning back.

The "Wedding Blackening" Tradition Of Scotland

This article describes the Wedding Blackening Tradition of Scotland. This article describes the Wedding Blackening Tradition of Scotland.as a "ritual hazing," the Scottish Wedding Blackening tradition mirrors the semi-sacrificial custom ofTarring and feathering is a tradition.Though people find the practice fun and energetic—like a good initiatory blackout—it demands a strong stomach. Sources state:

Depending on the area, either the bride or groom, or both, get taken by friends, relatives, coworkers, and others who join in. They are tied to a chair and covered in gross stuff like feathers, smelly sauces, rotten eggs, spoiled curry, curdled milk, boot polish, treacle, tar, soot, flour, cocoa powder, or anything black and grungy.

The couple gets marched through town, parade-float style, with revelers following. Sometimes neighbors even leave their homes to add their own fluids to the mix; make your own choice.

Rooster's Blood As A Substitute For Virgin's Blood

Remember in Rooster's Blood As A Substitute For Virgin's Blood.Snow White is mentioned.when the huntsman gave the Queen a deer's heart so Snow White could flee into the forest? This tradition acts like that. ThisThis is a resourceful Greek custom.not being a virgin on the wedding night was not a big deal. Everyone just needed to swap the blood of a freshly killed rooster for virginity blood. The thinking went like this:

Old Greeks believed the bride's family killed a rooster and kept its blood for the girl's first night as a wife. The rooster's blood matched a virgin woman's blood. This happened if the new couple had spent time together. The groom would help his wife show her purity to his strict family.

The best part is still ahead. On the wedding morning, both families cook the bird and hold a big, happy feast. The phrase "out of the bedroom and onto the table" fits this perfectly.

Cutting Open A Chicken To Inspect Its Intestines, Wedding-Cake Style

This wedding ritual is truly a sacrifice. The Daur Chick Liver tradition comes from Inner Mongolia, China. Unhealthy poultry signals an unhealthy marriage. According toSources.,

The young couple must kill a chick with a knife together. They then guess the wedding date by looking at the chick's liver. If the liver looks bad, they must keep killing chicks until they find a good one.

It is unclear what "unfortunate appearance" means here—malformed? Shrunken? Most people, unless they are farmers or vets, cannot tell the difference between a healthy and unhealthy chicken liver. Perhaps this explains the high divorce rate in the West. Still, who would slaughter a chick?

Staging Your Own Violent Death In Front Of Your Bride-To-Be

"Fake Your Own Death Wedding Proposals," a new idea is circulating. It recalls Bud Cort's staged suicides inHarold and Maude., but their real meaning is much less charming.

According to New York Magazine, Harold imitators lack the wit and flair needed to pull this off. Alexey Bykov, a 30-year-old from Russia, did this, according to reports:

They hired a movie director, stunt men, makeup artists, and photographers to stage a fatal car accident near where he planned to meet his girlfriend, Irena Kolokov. When a paramedic told Kolokov her boyfriend was dead, she cried. He then stood up and proposed to Irena, still covered in fake blood.

The splattered bride-to-be's reaction is unknown. However, after the potential groom explains, "I wanted her to realize how empty her life would be without me, and how life would have no meaning without me," someone might expect a kick to the curb soon.

Bride Kidnappings: A Custom In The Tradition Of Snatching Virgins Off The Street To Sacrifice

People think of bride kidnapping as a fun, staged ritual ending in drunken fun. But in modern Kyrgyzstan, bride abductions are real, troubling, and absurd.

According tothis 2013 featureinNewsweek:"In Kyrgyzstan, as many as 40% of ethnic Kyrgyz women are married after being kidnapped by the men who become their husbands." The process involves the woman being "often literally dragged off the street, bundled into the car and taken straight to the man's – where the family often begins wedding preparations."

What happens next is more bizarre. Since the wedding needs the bride's consent, people use actions to scare or "convince" her. Elderly female relatives of the kidnapper tear their hair, clench their teeth, and beg the bride to agree. They sometimes try to force a white scarf, a marriage symbol, onto her head to shame her into accepting.

Sometimes the girl fears so much she agrees just to escape being a central part of a frantic family event. Other times, if she handles the hazing, she says no or gallant male relatives rescue her, taking her home (though they face harassment and self-pleading).

Being Forced To Hold Your Fecal Matter And Urine In

This sounds like a grotesque murder ritual, similar to what the homicidal protagonist in the filmSevenwould do, for example (remember when he made that godless sinner eat himself to death?). Nevertheless, an Indonesian wedding tradition requires the bride and groom to expel neither urine nor feces for three days.aftertheir wedding.

Consider what "after the wedding" means here. Marriages involve drinking, feasting, and eating a lot. Not being able to use the bathroom after that partying seems like an impossible task.

The couple gets only minimal food and drink in this case, so that might not matter. Peeing or pooping secretly is not a good idea; it causes serious trouble, including: "a broken marriage, infidelity, or [the] death of [the couple's] children at a young age."

Other sourcesSome claim good foot walloping is a rite you must face before sleeping with your bride. Still, some toes getting stepped on seems certain.
