About this list

Sleepwalking, or somnambulism, can turn a restful night's sleep into a high-action adventure. It occurs during NREM sleep - non-rapid eye movement - and is linked to other sleep conditions. Sleepwalkers often do weird things, like drive or commit crimes, while asleep. They also frequently fall, requiring others to save them from harm during a somnambulant episode. People share their weirdest sleepwalking stories.

I often sleepwalk and make a nice sandwich, then leave it on the floor before going back to bed. Here are some of the strangest ones I have had in recent years:

I stuffed and cooked a turkey, then sat at the kitchen table when it was almost done. My roommate woke at 3 am while I was basting it. He got upset because it was his turkey, but he saw I was asleep. He stayed up to stop me from burning the house down.

He showed me videos he took after I woke up. He laughed that my stuffing and the turkey tasted better than what he would have made.

I grew up a sleepwalker in a very rural area. I used to walk the cornfields outside while asleep. My parents usually woke up from dog barking, found me missing, and had to pull me out of the rows.

Another trick was watching static on the TV. Stations would go "off air" after a certain time. I would sleep soundly with my eyes open in front of the TV.

    From Redditor /u/Silent_Ogion:

I have had fun sleepwalking. People tell me I walk up to them and quote books. I have a favorite story. Remember, I am female and I cosplay.

I own an old Chobbits costume I rarely wear. Getting into it takes ages, like threading a corset and everything. I woke up once, sitting on the couch in full Chii costume (petticoats, corset, stockings), readingThe Watchmen. I woke up while turning the page. It felt surreal. It took me half an hour to get out of the costume and back to bed.

I woke up one Saturday morningmy mother was crying and panicking because she could not find her wedding ring. She always puts it by the sink. While she searched frantically, I thought, "Weird, why do I feel like I had something to do with this?"

A strange feeling came over me. I lifted my mattress, and there was her wedding ring. I am a sleepwalking klepto.

    From Redditor /u/epicfaceplant12:

I have been a sleepwalker my whole life, which much of my family accepts or entertains.

I was about twelve, in Canada for my half-brother's birthday ski trip. We rode a few ski lifts. On the first run, he fell and tore his ACL. They tobogganed him down the hill. He had medical procedures. I don't recall the details; I was twelve and focused on playing Smash Bros. at our condo.

That night, my half-brother slept on the pullout bed while I rested soundly. My sleepwalking started, and I walked to where he slept. I then jumped onto him, landing on his leg with the newly torn ACL.

He woke up screaming, but I stayed asleep. He told me to get ice from the freezer. I obeyed, then returned to bed, waiting for his annoyed explanation the next morning.

    From Redditor /u/HayWalker:

I changed once while sleepwalking before going out and starting two tractors. I went to bed in a nightgown and leggings, but woke up in the barn wearing a blouse, jeans, and boots. I even changed my underwear. The noise of the second tractor starting woke me.

My mom woke up to find me in my underwear. I was steering the vacuum back and forth across the carpet, not even on, with the electrical cord still tight—just vacuuming.

One time I sleepwalked, I went into the kitchen, took off my pants, and put them in the microwave. I don't know if I started it or if someone stopped me.

When I was about three, I climbed out of bed. I walked into the kitchen. Then, I rolled into my dog's bed.

My dog then slept in my bed. The next morning, my mom laughed when she found both of us swapped.

    From Redditor /u/robots_control_us:

I passed out with gas-permeable contacts in my eyes. I woke up without lenses. I went to the bathroom and found I had taken my contacts out while sleepwalking and covered them in toothpaste instead of contact solution. My eyes burned with a minty fury that day.

Gas-permeable contacts are hard contacts that do not get thrown away. I have had mine for almost ten years. They cost more than soft contacts, but if your prescription doesn't change much, they are worth the cost.

I had no backup lenses or glasses (my first mistake). My vision is bad, so I need lenses to drive and work. I had to try to rinse the toothpaste off in time to get ready for work.

Scrubbing contact lenses with contact cleaner took four or five cycles before I could keep them in my eyes without constant tears. Coworkers gave me a new nickname that day: "Colgate."

I put up Christmas lights on the front porch in February. All the boxes were empty in my room, so I thought it was me.

I ripped out the last page of a book I was reading and hid it somewhere.

I only knew this when I finished the book later and the last page was gone. I remembered a vague dream about spies.

    From Redditor /u/MadLintElf:

I have been a sleepwalker since I was about eight. I am 48 now. I moved to a new place with a mirror in the hallway after moving into the apartment.

I woke up in the middle of the night with no lights, only the full moon. I apparently stood in front of the mirror but did not notice. I saw my reflection and went into a defensive mode. As I tried to punch the person in front of me, I quickly realized it was me.

My heart pounded; everything happened fast. It was 3:00 am, and I could not return to sleep. I still have nightmares about that event.

When I was about 15, I made a waffle from scratch while sleepwalking. I cooked it, took a bite, put it on the bedroom floor, and went back to bed.

I felt very confused when I woke up. I did not clean up any of the mess, so there was some mess when I got up.

    From a former Redditor:

My girlfriend slept over. She went to the couch, and I went to my bed. She woke up to find the couch cushions stacked in a line on top of her. She swears I did it because she knows I can sleepwalk. I guess sleeping me made her think she was cold and that this was the best help.

I used to have a big red chair with a huge cushion in my room. One time, I woke up using the big red cushion instead of my pillow. The thing hung more off the bed than on. I have no idea how I balanced it so perfectly. I went across the room and found my little pillow placed on the chair where the cushion belonged.

One story: I woke up in the shower past midnight. I was confused. It was running, and I had stripped off my clothes and gotten in. The temperature was really nice. I enjoyed it until I realized, "Wait a minute. What time is it? Didn't I already go to bed?"

I woke up. I got dressed. I walked outside. I went down four flights of stairs to play basketball outside in the middle of the night. My mom woke me up. She saw what I was doing. I freaked out.

We put an alarm on the door after that.
