15 Weird Pokémon Evolutions

Archerfish turns into an octopus. This lacks species consistency. Remoraid models a gun; Octillery models a tank. The weapons upgrade works, but a smaller, gun-based Octopus would work better for Remoraid.

Clamperl evolves into either Huntail or Gorebyss. Nobody knows why. Real life avoids such species swaps, but in Pokémon, anything goes.Pokémon allows anything.Pokémon allows anything.

Dratini is a blue, snake-like dragon. Dragonair is a larger, more elegant blue, snake-like dragon. The pattern doesn't continue. Dragonite, the final evolution, is a giant orange dragon with pumpkin elegance.

This outcome surprised many. Still, this evolutionary line helped establish Pokémon's tendency to throw curveballs.Pokemon's Dragonair To Dragonite appears in the list '15 Weird Pokémon Evolutions'.Pokémon throws curveballs.

Feebas is the world's ugliest Pokemon. Milotic is the world's most beautiful. This mirrors the Ugly Duckling tale. A shabby baby swan compares itself to cute yellow ducklings, then becomes a gorgeous full-grown swan.

The leap from largemouth bass to serpentine mermaid is too much.

Trainers trade Karrablast and Shelmet to get Escavalier and Accelgor. They evolve upon trade completion.

This game mechanic is fun. How does it map to biology? Karrablast evolves from electrical stimulation when attacking Shelmet. If so, it evolves through...Battling Shelmet.Shelmet evolves through battling, not trading.

Some entries state they must stay together. This happens even with long-distance trades and Pokeballs. Dex entries admit no one knows why.

This evolutionary line makes no sense. Cosmoem weighs 2204.4 lbs. It then shrinks to 0.2 ounces when it becomes Cosmog. Where does all that mass go?

The two possible third-stage evolutions exist. Lunala looks like Cosmoem and Cosmog. Solgaleo looks unlike them, except for face markings. Achieving that sunny theme while referencing the dark Pokémon seems hard, but it is not impossible.

Geodude and Graveller are living rocks. That is all they are. Golem is a reptilian creature with a rock shell. Where did the flesh come from? Nobody knows!

Poliwrath remains a tadpole. Its anger makes sense because it never becomes an adult. Why does it stay a tadpole? Why is it so strong?

Politoed's evolutiondoesbiology make sense. Tadpoles do turn into frogs and toads. Visually, it looks wrong.

Venomoth is a moth, as its name implies. It evolves from Venonat, which stems from a flea or a venomous caterpillar. If Venonat is a flea, becoming a moth fails. If it's a caterpillar, moths are possible, but a cocoon stage is missing.

Venomoth looks a lot like Caterpie. Caterpie has a cocoon stage. Butterfree, Caterpie's final evolution, looks like Venonat. People think Venomoth should evolve from Metapod, but they swapped it with Butterfree at the last minute.

Piranhas and sharks both seem overly aggressive. Few things link the South American freshwater fish to a species with nearly 500 ocean variations. Still, Carvanha evolves into Sharpedo. Who cares about species consistency?

Banette appears when abandoned toys get angry and seek revenge. Its predecessor, Shuppet, is a ghostly teru teru bozu doll that flits, hunting negative emotions to eat.

The Pokedex claims Shuppet holds a resentful toy causing it to become Banette. This setup seems plausible. However, Shuppet consumes resentful emotions, making them vanish. Since this doesn't happen, how does Banette form from an inanimate toy if it started as a Shuppet?

The whole idea nears logic, but it breaks down at the end.

The shift from Galarian Linoone to Obstagoon works if you just observe them. But looking at the evolution reason breaks the logic. The Pokedex says Obstagoon evolves after Galarian Linoone endures many hardships in the Galar region.

This does not happen to Linoone not from Galar. Even if they travel to Galar and face those same challenges, non-Galarian Linoone will not become Obstagoon regardless of their life in another region.

This fits game mechanics. Obstagoon did not exist when Linoone first appeared. The logic is weak regarding in-game lore.

A Shellder biting a Slowpoke's tail causes it to become Slowbro. A Shellder biting its head turns it into Slowking, giving it a large intelligence boost from poison bathing its brain.

The first odd thing about this gray creature is that it clamps onto these Pokémon. This creature looks nothing like Shellder, a Pokémon featuring a small purple shell and large eyes. Second, the creature changes immediately after Shellder leaves. This might fit Slowbro because the change is small. Slowking's brain function, however, has been completely reworked. You would expect it to take time for it to revert.

Cubone to Marowak looks visually smooth; Marowak really resembles an older Cubone. The Pokedex states Cubone evolves into Marowak when it stops mourning its dead mother. In the game, Cubone evolves at Level 28.

This suggests every Cubone reaching Level 28 has a mother who died. That is not a sensible trait for a species!

A dog becoming a bigger dog seems strange until you see that Yamper and Boltund are two completelydifferent dog species.Yamper is based on a corgi, and Boltund is based on a foxhound. This is not the worst example on the list, but it still lacks sense. Huge corgi fans might feel let down. Boltund at least keeps the yellow color scheme.
