India proves tough for solo travelers. Cab drivers and salesmen followed me for miles. I am a guy. Every time I took a taxi or tuk-tuk, they dropped me at a random jewelry store because the driver gets a commission or free gas from buying something. Being white made me a target. I could not picture being a woman alone in New Delhi. Some areas or cities are better.

A guy I worked with who traveled a lot said, "Without a doubt, Yemen"

He recounted being picked up at the airport by a company-funded armed guard and a driver. They took him to the company compound, which was a large wall around an apartment building. Strict orders stated never leave the armed guard's side, or you become a bargaining chip in a losing deal.

    From Redditor u/Anzai:

My worst experience was in Ethiopia. If you travel as a wealthy tourist, hire your own driver, and book hotels ahead, the experience is likely reasonable.

I tried the backpacker route. I faced constant hassles from everyone just for fun. Teenagers held tools to my face at bus checkpoints. I constantly got ripped off with extra 'luggage charges' on buses, or forced onto buses going nowhere despite their claims.

They stole my trek deposit and vanished. Other tour operators saw me waiting; they helped but tried to get me into their trek instead. They demanded money without a receipt and upfront. They even found and beat the person who took my small initial payment, dragging him into my hotel room with twelve others to make him repay it, then used that to pressure me into their trek.

Homeless guys grabbed me in an alley in Addis Ababa. I only avoided them by pretending I would fight them all (I was bluffing).

Jamaica involved friends being grabbed into shops and locals checking us out. We only got about 100' from the resort before we left. People we tipped smiled, but the moment we left, they talked badly about us.

    Morocco.

From being ripped off by children following me down a dark alley for money, to the awful hotel reception, to rich, spoiled nightclub locals, I felt the most relief leaving any other country.

I hated Sri Lanka. Charlatans and cheats filled up my time there last.

In Egypt, an underaged girl cannot leave the hotel without her parents. Even with them, older men might follow and harass her, but they do nothing when she is alone.

    For traveling/getting around:

Germany. I love Germany, but I mentally prepare to be treated like garbage at airports and trains. Security checks yelled at me, and they physically escorted me off trains. I would still go back. People were friendly.

    From Redditor u/checkeredcooper:

Prague airport attendants were the rudest I met. It was late, and my friends and I were the only people in the airport; it felt surreal. Locals were normal, and I always felt safe. In Croatia, I met rude people even though I tried to be kind, patient, and used please and thank you often. Every waiter tried to cheat us, and every shop attendant ignored us (or snorted when we entered). I think they hate tourists.

Dubai. It is rich, sophisticated, and a holiday spot for many. I hate its tasteless glitz, its lack of soul, and the society's intense social layers.

    From Redditor u/SnooShortcuts3424:

I saw everyone in Madrid, Spain throw trash on the street. A family finished takeout containers and left them there. Street sweepers cleaned the trash with water nightly. This was stupid. Also, cops beat a train jumper five on one with batons. It was terrifying.

Poland winters feel grim. Brutalist architecture discourages living. Robbings happen; you were just unlucky. Warsaw is not the best-looking city. It fell during WW2 and communists rebuilt it with communist ideas, except for the center. Still, sorry you had a bad time here.

    From Redditor u/Jakcle20:

France shifts. Away from tourist spots, some people act snobby using English or bad French. Japan shows friendliness initially, but they bad-mouth you quickly. Most Asian countries act this way. The Philippines has nice people, but in Manila, straying down the wrong street leads to being stuck up. That is a lot of places.

The Philippines probably has the worst traffic. I do not get why so many cars exist on a small island.

    A 20-30 commute becomes a four-hour wait.

Decades in NYC were fine. Then I was shocked by aggressive pickpockets in Rome. I never go back.
