Some comic book characters are impossible to adapt. Tricky costumes, unwieldy power sets, and ambitious designs make them better suited to comic panels than live-action screens. Superheroes like Ghost Rider, Green Lantern, and the Thing have given filmmakers trouble. Others, like Mojo, Plastic Man, and M.O.D.O.K., seem designed to disappoint in live-action. For various reasons, some characters should stay in the medium that created them.
About this list

Few comic book supervillains are as iconic as the Devourer of Worlds.GalactusStan Lee and Jack Kirby created Galactus when the Fantastic Four were the main heroes in the Marvel Universe during the 1960s. Galactus is a cosmic entity that consumes entire planets. That Kirby-designed purple crown-like helmet looks amazing.
20th Century Fox brought Galactus to the big screen inFantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver SurferThe film made the character a giant, cosmic stormcloud. A silhouette of the classic character shows in the clouds, hinting at the true look, though it never happened.
242 - 2

Cain Marko, AKAthe JuggernautJuggernaut is huge and incredibly strong. Juggernaut is one of the strongest beings in Marvel Comics. Marko stands over 9 feet tall and weighs nearly 2,000 pounds. Marko is not someone to mess with lightly.
Though a mountain of a man with a metal helmet looks scary on the page, showing it on screen proves hard. Juggernaut has appeared twice in live-action projects so far: X-Men: The Last StandandDeadpool 2, andThe Last StandThe film's take on Cain Marko felt weak. (Who thought that leather vest was scary?) His cameo in the Merc with a Mouth's sequel showed more faithfulness to his comic book look, but it was still small compared to the pages. Seriously, Marko causes Hulk-level destruction and could easily be a main villain in a full X-Men film.X-Menfilm.
156 - 3

M.O.D.O.K.(or Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing) is barely 'comic book.' Though technically human, M.O.D.O.K. acts like a giant-faced computer riding in a flying, golden throne called the "Doomsday Chair" and looks like a child's nightmare drawing, not a scary supervillain.
M.O.D.O.K. appears in many Marvel cartoons. It seems hard to believe the character will ever move to live-action. If he does, he probably won't use his usual big-headed design.

If Marvel Studios wants to get strange with the X-Men reboot, the studio will bringMojoto the party. One of theSpineless Ones, Mojo rules Mojoworld as a slave-monger, running a harsh TV empire. Mojo and his "Mojoverse" are a "meta" villain in Marvel Comics history, commenting on American TV obsession.Mojo rules Mojoworld as the slave-mongering ruler and runs a ruthless television empire. Mojo and his "Mojoverse" offer a comment on American television obsession; Mojo is one of Marvel Comics' "meta" villains.
If the MCU includes Mojo, the studio likely avoids his 500-pound frame. A robotic cradle with spider-like legs gives him movement. Mojo is a grotesque creature that clashes with the MCU's family-friendly image.
70 - 5

If you want crazy powers from Marvel Comics pages,MedusaMedusa is best known as the Queen of the Inhumans. She has trichokinesis.Trichokinesis means the ability to manipulate and control hair. She may not be the only Marvel character with this power, but she is the most prominent.
This power looks great on the comic page. Live-action versions make it unwieldy. CGI artists struggled with it.CGI artists on the Inhumans television series struggled to show Medusa's wild, red hair. The effort failed. The television series did not work for Medusa's hair. The InhumansInhumansitself.

If the Fantastic Four movies have shown that limb-stretching powers do not easily transfer to live-action, you need a cringe-worthy dance sequence.Fantastic FourThis lack of translation happens unless you want an absolutely cringe-worthy dance sequence. The dance sequence felt cringe-worthy.Marvel is trying again with Ms. Marvel.Ms. MarvelDC might avoid live-action with its stretchy hero, Plastic Man.Plastic Man.
Eel O'Brian (Patrick is his real name) is a comical DC character. His elastic body suits the role. Plastic Man provides a physical joke, but he does not fit DC's dark style. Will Warner Bros., the company behind Joker, release a Plastic Man movie?JokerPlastic Man movie?

Brainiac gets the moniker "Brainiac." Hearing this is not a shock. Vril Dox is extremely smart.Vril Doxalong with numerous other BrainiacsNumerous other BrainiacsThis character is extremely intelligent. He is the smartest being in DC Comics and a relentlessly evil villain. The green-skinned Coluan changes forms, always mixing alien tech and biology to unsettle readers.
This character is visually distinct, making it hard to make him human. DC's TV universe tried to make him human in Smallville.Smallville, James Marsters played a human character controlled by Brainiac.controlled by BrainiacSupergirlHer take on Brainiac-5was so off-putting they gave him a regular human disguise.

Omega RedOmega Red is a villain the X-Men dislike. The man easily takes down heavy-hitters like Wolverine and Cable. He has powers like emitting lethal pheromones, absorbing life force, superhuman strength, stamina, and reflexes. Arkady Gregorivich Rossovich is a Russian experiment that matches the best.
Omega Red is somewhat in Deadpool 2.Deadpool 2as a momentary Easter egg for fans, but that does not count. Translating his radioactive tentacles from page to screen is hard. No actor seems able to make his long-blond hair and red bandana look menacing.
25 - 9

Boston Brand, AKADeadmanDeadman is one of DC Comics' most interesting heroes. Brand is dead and has no body. He acts by possessing people to touch the real world. This idea creates fascinating stories.
This cult favorite might feature in a supporting role. DC and Warner Bros. likely won't fund a movie about the character. Making a pale husk in an acrobat suit the focus of a comic book blockbuster is a hard ask.
24 - 10

Lex Luthor, Zod, and Brainiac are often named the best Superman villains. However, one fan favorite baddie gets overlooked:Mr. Mxyzptlk appears in the list 'Classic Comics Characters Live-Action Movies Can't Do Justice To'.This goofy imp from the 5th Dimension is not as evil as other villains. His constant bothering of Krypton's son makes him a must-see part of Superman's bad guys.

The Mr. Mxyzptlk of DC Comics warps reality, making the trippy scenes inMr. Mxyzptlk and Doctor Strange appear in the list 'Classic Comics Characters Live-Action Movies Can't Do Justice To'.seem simple by comparison. He can do almost anything imaginable; he is basically omnipotent. This makes him hard to portray accurately before his pixie form and purple bowler hat.

Some character designs lacked live-action adaptation ideas. MeetKilowog appears in the list 'Classic Comics Characters Live-Action Movies Can't Do Justice To'.. Besides the hard-to-adapt powers of other Green Lanterns, Kilowog's look is awkward to film. The character mixes a hippopotamus, pig, and man.
The 8-foot-tall alien balances menace and charm. He calls people "poozers" with his signature line and shows an unbreakable spirit. This character always proves hard to adapt, no matter the CGI team's talent.
-4 - 12

Hawkman appears in the list 'Classic Comics Characters Live-Action Movies Can't Do Justice To'.Hawkman and Hawkman appear in the list 'Classic Comics Characters Live-Action Movies Can't Do Justice To'.Hawkman and Hawkman appear in the list 'Classic Comics Characters Live-Action Movies Can't Do Justice To'.have been major DC Comics players for a long time. Cursed to be reborn repeatedly, the pair search for each other on Earth. They meet, fall in love, and die to start the cycle over. The hawk heroes fly with silly headdresses and wield weapons like maces and swords.
Other heroes with odd costumes, like Thor and Aquaman, made the live-action jump. But gold, winged helmets, and real feathers do not fit DC's film style. That is before you explain they lackrealwings, and their powers come from a special alien Nth metal.

Ben Grimm's Thing.Marvel Comics readers have loved Ben Grimm since the early 1960s. His love-hate bond with Johnny Storm and his adventures with the Fantastic Four delighted many readers. Adapting a character made of orange rocks proved hard over the years.
The bodysuit Michael Chiklis wore in theFantastic Four. The mid-2000s Fantastic Four films were decent for that time. However, they did not age well. Marvel Studios should do better for the 2015Fantastic Four.film. The character has a low batting average so far. Marvel Studios will likely bring the "first family" to the MCU later and try again with the Yancy Street brawler.

If some comic book characters belong in funny books, the Silver Surfer is a good example.Silver Surfer.Imbued with the Power Cosmic, Norrin Radd is a strong Marvel Comics character. He flies around the cosmos on a surfboard while wearing a silver Speedo that matches his skin color.
Radd looks striking on the comic page. Something got lost when he appeared inFantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.. Perhaps too much detail on those shiny silver abs caused trouble. Marvel Studios can prove them wrong in the MCU now that it has all Fantastic Four rights again.

The various individuals called "Ghost Rider." in Marvel Comics share similar powers: a flaming skeleton head, superhuman strength and durability, and the Penance Stare. This ability makes anyone staring into their eyes feel all the pain and misery they inflicted on others throughout their life forever.
Nicolas Cage played the characters in the live-action Ghost Rider films.Ghost Rider.Gabriel Luna played the Ghost Rider inAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.These adaptations mostly followed the Spirit of Vengeance. Still, the Rider's flaming CGI skull does not work outside a comic book. Not every comic book character moves to film.
