Movie plot twists can surprise and delight audiences. A well-executed twist adds fun or depth to the plot, but it's a delicate process. The setup and payoff must make sense. When done right, viewers are delighted. But sometimes, a twist is pointless. A film might not follow through, or a sequel might undo or undermine it. This can be frustrating, revealing a lack of planning. Filmmakers try to be clever, but fall short. The following cases are examples of movies that botched their twists.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen appears in the list '12 Pointless Movie Plot Twists'.The film drops a major bombshell on franchise fans. Partway through, Alice (Isabel Lucas) tries to seduce Sam (Shia LaBeouf) but Mikaela (Megan Fox), Sam's girlfriend, catches them. Tension builds between the women. Alice reveals she is a Decepticon in disguise. A mechanical tail and tongue emerge from her body. The scene shows evil Transformers can disguise themselves as human beings.
Fans thought this game-changing reveal would change the franchise forever. It did not. The series never mentions Decepticons transforming into humans again. This is illogical. Such an ability would give them a huge advantage against the Autobots. One must ask why Alice disguised herself. If she wanted Sam dead, she could have just attacked him in her normal form.

Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris) is Laurie Strode's daughter. This makes her Michael Myers' niece.Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers is in the list '12 Pointless Movie Plot Twists'.The mask-wearing psycho escapes a mental institution and returns to Haddonfield to cause more bloodshed. Jamie, who lives with a foster family, finds herself in the middle of it all. Psychiatrist Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasance) patrols town trying to stop Michael from hurting anyone else.
The film's climax shows a pickup truck hit Michael, sending him into a ditch. Michael seems dead. Then Jamie touches his hand. He sits up. Cops shoot him, sending his body into a mine. Jamie feels relief at the end of the situation at the foster home.Halloween 4 is in the list '12 Pointless Movie Plot Twists'.The film ends with Jamie stabbing her foster mother with scissors. She seems possessed by whatever evil was in her uncle after that hand touch.
This sets Jamie up as the 'new' Michael Myers in future installments.Halloween is in the list '12 Pointless Movie Plot Twists'.sequels. The idea is cool, but it has a flaw.Halloween 5 is in the list '12 Pointless Movie Plot Twists'.The film opens with Jamie in a mental hospital, clearly traumatized by a nightmare that Michael is coming for her. This happens as expected. The idea of Jamie taking over her uncle is dropped. Michael stays the only Michael.

The Last Jedi is in the list '12 Pointless Movie Plot Twists'.Finn (John Boyega) and Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) travel to Canto Bight, a casino town. They seek contact with DJ, a morally gray hacker who might help them fight the First Order. They want him to disable the First Order's tracking device. Local security spots them, causing a chase. DJ helps them enter the First Order's ship, the Supremacy, where the tracking system is. Captain Phasma captures the group before the mission ends. DJ acts selfishly, trading Resistance information to General Hux for his freedom and money.
The decision to show DJ this way feels odd. For a long time, he seemed set to be central. Audiences want to see him disable the First Order's tracking device. They want to see how he does it and what stops him. Instead, they push him out.The Last JediBenicio del Toro plays the character. He sells out Finn and Rose, then bolts. This feels anticlimactic.
Introducing DJ and then failing to have him complete his main task is a pointless search.

Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) funds an expedition to moon LV-223.PrometheusThe crew explores human life origins by finding the Engineers who seeded Earth. Weyland records a message for the crew, knowing he will die upon arrival. The trek fails due to a dishonest android, dark liquid, and one character becoming infected with alien life.
Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) finds Weyland alive, hiding in hypersleep on the ship. Old and weak, he asks the Engineers how to extend his life or avoid death. Soon, he confronts an Engineer. The creature kills him. Hiding dead seems like too much effort for the man who paid for everything. He could have just traveled with the rest. Having him die after revealing he wasn't dead is needless.

Wes Craven's New NightmareFreddy Krueger became real and stalks those who made the original movie.A Nightmare on Elm StreetHeather Langenkamp stars and Craven directs. Langenkamp deals with Freddy killing her husband and chasing her son. Craven admits nightmares show the film series harnessed an ancient supernatural power. His movie about evil unleashed actual evil.
Robert Englund, who played Freddy in those films, is discussed.Elm Street.Midway through installments, New Nightmare occurs.New Nightmare.Langenkamp contacts the actor. He says he has also had Freddy nightmares. This suggests Freddy might target his actor. Englund disappears after this scene, apparently untouched by “the Entity,” unlike Langenkamp. This builds up to a big letdown.

The Dark Knight Rises.Batman (Christian Bale) leaves exile to fight Bane (Tom Hardy), a psychopath committing terrorist acts across Gotham City. Returning to his old life after eight years is hard. A local cop named Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) helps him get motivated. Blake admires Batman’s heroism. The costumed figure is the kind of crimefighter he wants to be.
Bane throws Gotham into extreme chaos. Batman pushes himself to the limit to stop him.The Dark Knight Rises.Batman flies off with a bomb Bane planned to use to destroy the city. It explodes over the bay, presumably killing Bane. In a final scene, he survives and runs off with “Catwoman” Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway), never to return.
Blake resigns from the police force, revealing his real name is Robin. He is set up as the famous “boy wonder” who was Batman's sidekick. This happens in the last two minutes of Christopher Nolan's trilogy, after Batman retires, offering no real impact. The moment only gives the audience a famous reference.

The original. Now You See Me.The original was packed with plot twists. Some made sense; others did not. Even the failed twists pale next to the unnecessary twist in the sequel. Now You See Me 2.The story features the Four Horsemen magicians using their skills to expose a tech genius about to release a gizmo. This device lets him unlock any computer globally, ending privacy. A second genius, Walter Mabry (Daniel Radcliffe), kidnaps the group, forcing them to steal the gizmo for him. One henchman is Chase, Merritt's identical twin brother. Woody Harrelson plays both brothers.
Merritt's evil twin offers many plot options. The series pulls the rug out from under audiences. Chase might just be an illusion or a scam. Perhaps he has his brother's skills for mentalism. Chase is just a henchman with no plot function. He could be anyone. Making him the twin of a lead character was unnecessary. Now You See Me 2does with him.

Iron Man 3Tony Stark fights the Mandarin, a terrorist. An investigation finds the culprit, or so he thinks. He confronts an actor hired as the Mandarin's public face. Scientist Aldrich Killian created a distraction to enact his plans without Iron Man. This puts Stark at a disadvantage. Killian exposes Pepper Potts to Extremis, a regenerative treatment he made. Extremis has fatal side effects; Pepper's life is in grave danger.
Before the bad stuff starts, Pepper gains superpowers. She uses these powers to help Stark beat Killian in the final minutes of Iron Man 3.Iron Man 3, Stark stops Extremis's effects in Pepper's body, promising to cure her. The audience remains unsure how this works. She does not die; she appears in future MCU films. We do not know if she is cured or if she still has powers. The MCU forgets this twist.

Kevin Costner plays the title character inRobin Hood: Prince of Thieves, a slight remake of the classic story. The Sheriff of Nottingham and his men killed Robin's father. Robin seeks revenge but promises his fallen comrade Peter he will care for his sister MarianMary Elizabeth MastrantonioAs the sheriff pursues them, Robin and Marian hide in Sherwood Forest. They meet outlaws, including Will Scarlett (Christian Slater). Will dislikes Robin's presence and his influence over the outlaws, causing friction. He makes a deal with the sheriff to kill Robin.
Will explains in a scene he is Robin's half-brother. Robin's father had an affair with Will's mother after Robin's mother died. Robin saw this as a betrayal, so his father ended the relationship, leaving Will without a father. This idea creates drama. Robin is overjoyed when he learns he and Will are siblings; Will drops his resentment seeing Robin's joy.Robin Hood: Prince of ThievesThis intense idea starts the description, then does nothing with it. The ending feels too easy and simple.

The villain in the 007 adventureLive and Let DieDr. Kananga (Yaphet Kotto) is the villain. He plans to make drug addicts by giving heroin away free at his restaurants. This shuts out other dealers, then he charges huge prices to the addicts. The plan involves making the drug on the Caribbean island of San Mosique. He uses the locals' fear of the voodoo priest Baron Samedi (Geoffrey Holder) to do this.
James Bond never allows this. Roger Moore plays Bond. 007 forces Kananga to swallow a gas pellet; his body explodes. Baron Samedi gets thrown into a snake-filled coffin. Bond wins, but the last shot shows Samedi on the train front with his new lover. This suggests Samedi will return to menace the secret agent in a future Bond film. However, the character never returns to the franchise.Live and Let DieThe character shows great effort to let us know he is alive, then he does nothing with that news.

Spider-Man: No Way HomeThe film ends with a shocking development. The multiverse opens, letting past Spidey villains—Electro, Green Goblin, and Doc Ock—enter Peter Parker's dimension. Two other Peter incarnations arrive, causing chaos. Peter sees MJ and Ned, who do not recognize him.
Cut toDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessStrange and Wong meet America Chavez. The three sit in a restaurant, comparing notes on why she appeared in Strange's dream. During this talk, Strange mentions a recent 'incident' involving Spider-Man. Strange then starts describing the events ofNo Way HomeIf the spell aimed to make everyone forget Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Strange should not recall this memory. The MCU might offer an explanation later, but watching the beginning ofMultiverse of MadnessThe moment feels confusing.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2Peter "Star-Lord" Quill reunites with his lost father Ego (Kurt Russell). The reunion appears heartwarming to Quill and the audience. Time shows Ego is not the loving father he acts like. Ego is actually a "Celestial," a planet with huge powers. This makes Quill half-planet. Father teaches son how to use some of his inherited power. Ego seeded himself in thousands of worlds. This boosts his power and galactic reach greatly. Ego earns his name because he is a narcissistic megalomaniac.
In the movie's big finale, Ego fights hard. Being a planet gives Ego much to use. Quill uses the powers his father taught him to save the day. This implies that though Ego is very powerful, his son might be even stronger. This twist goes unaddressed inAvengers: Infinity WarandAvengers: Endgame, though. As a half-planet, Quill should have given Thanos more of a challenge than he did. Quill could have used the skills Ego taught him to stop Thanos from wiping out half the world with a snap.
