About this list

The '90s took comic book characters to the extreme. Heroes and villains were covered in pouches, ponytails, pads, and plasma pistols from head to toe, with origins just as intense as their wardrobe. Following writers like Frank Miller and Alan Moore, who pushed comic book writing into darker territory in the '80s, and artists like Dave McKean, who took things in a more cerebral direction, the '90s saw a surge in gritty stories and over-the-top characters. New companies like Image Comics built their foundation on these extreme concepts, and even Marvel and DC joined in. With reboots of old characters, brand new heroes, and names that rose and fell with the Y2K scare, '90s comic book characters are among the most visually recognizable in the medium's history. But which one stands out as the most extreme?
