Comic book fans are used to temporary replacement superheroes. Even top heroes need time off, letting legacy characters shine. Usually, sidekicks take over - Dick Grayson becomes Batman when Bruce Wayne is away, and Sam Wilson becomes Captain America when Steve Rogers retires. But sometimes, a surprise replacement emerges. DC and Marvel Comics often choose unconventional fill-ins for their top heroes, sparking controversy that sells comic books. These changes usually fail, but occasionally, a replacement succeeds and becomes a standalone character, even if they must give up the codename when the original returns.
